IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.
Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter
- suggest how you could help her in her home
- say why you would like to do this work
- explain when you will and will not be available
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs. Barrett.
I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to help you in your home next summer. I would be delighted to assist you, as I believe I could be a reliable and hardworking for the position.
To begin with, I could help you with different household jobs. For example, I could clean the house, do the laundry and prepare simple meals. In addition, I could go shopping for you with gardening and keeping the house tidy. I would also be happy to do any other small jobs that you may need.
I would like to do this work because I enjoy helping other people. Moreover, I would like to earn some extra money during my summer holiday. Most importantly as you are an English speaking person, I would have an excellent opportunity to practice my English in ever situations and become more confident.
As far my availability, I will be free from June to August. However, I will not be available on weekday mornings because I have an English course. Instead, I can work every afternoon and at weekends. Therefore, I can easily fit this job into my summer schedule. If you need someone on a regular basis, I would be happy to discuss a time table with you.
I hope you will consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon and discussing the position in more detail.
Yours sincerely,
Kriti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You suggested how you could help Mrs Barrett by detailing household jobs such as cleaning, laundry, and simple meal preparation. You also clearly explained your motivation for doing this work, mentioning your enjoyment of helping others, your desire to earn extra money, and the opportunity to practice your English. Finally, you outlined your availability by stating the exact months (June to August) and explaining that weekday mornings are restricted due to an English course, while afternoons and weekends are free. Your tone is consistently polite, appropriate for a semi-formal letter, and all ideas are well-developed and relevant, fulfilling the band 7 and 8 criteria effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter is clearly structured with a logical flow and easy-to-follow progression. You used paragraphing effectively, giving each bullet point and separate idea its own dedicated paragraph, which makes the letter reader-friendly. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used appropriately to connect your thoughts. While referencing is generally clear, there is a minor error in the opening sentence ('reliable and hardworking for the position' missing a noun), but overall, the organisation demonstrates clear logical progression throughout, fitting comfortably into the band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with some precision and flexibility. Phrases like 'delighted to assist you', 'household jobs', and 'regular basis' show good control of common collocations. You also attempted some less common vocabulary and idiomatic phrases, such as 'fit this job into my summer schedule'. However, there are a few minor vocabulary slips or omissions, such as writing 'reliable and hardworking for the position' (missing a noun like 'person') and 'in ever situations' (instead of 'every situation'). Despite these occasional errors, communication is never impeded, placing your lexical control solidly at band 6.5 to 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You successfully produced a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over your grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'I would be delighted to assist you, as I believe I could be a reliable and hardworking...' and 'If you need someone on a regular basis, I would be happy to discuss...'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your verb tenses are handled well throughout. There are a few minor grammatical errors, such as 'As far my availability' (missing 'concerned') and 'in ever situations' (plural/singular mismatch). However, these errors do not impede communication, and you maintained a high frequency of error-free sentences, warranting a strong band 7.
