Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
This is Nousheer, Age 28, Male. I saw an advertisement online where you are seeking fro help at your home. I Live close by to your address and I'm ready for help. I am a college student looking for a part time job to cover my expenses and i got some bills to cover by myself, and I think this is the best opportunity.
I am pretty good at driving if you are looking for someone who can drive you from point A to point B. And also i really love cooking. I was a chef at an Italian restaurant when i was doing my masters in USA. and am also very good at English so that we communicate with each other without any confusion.
I will be available on Monday, Friday,Saturday and Sunday. If you think I am a suitable person for your home help, I would be glad to start from Monday.
Best regards,
Nousheer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, meeting the core requirements of a general correspondence letter. You successfully suggest how you could help around the house by mentioning driving and cooking, state why you would like the job to cover college expenses, and explain your availability on specific days. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of your driving and cooking skills is clear, but the details regarding your availability are rather brief. To reach a higher level, you would need to extend and support all your ideas more thoroughly, providing richer context for each bullet point while maintaining a consistently clear tone throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable beginning, middle, and end, fitting the format of an informal request. Ideas are generally grouped logically, such as placing your background and motivations in the opening paragraph and your specific skills in the second. However, cohesion within and between sentences is sometimes mechanical or abrupt, particularly in transitions like 'And also i really love cooking'. Referencing and logical progression could be smoother. To achieve a higher standard, you should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to connect your thoughts naturally, alongside more careful paragraphing to ensure the flow of information feels effortless.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message and allowing you to communicate your experiences effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'opportunity', 'master's', and 'suitable', though these are accompanied by some word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'seeking fro help' and 'Live close by to'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the precision of your writing. To improve this area and reach a higher standard, you should aim to use a broader and more flexible range of lexical items with greater stylistic awareness, ensuring careful control over spelling and word collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and conditional sentences effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as capitalization issues ('Live', 'I', 'Saturday'), lowercase pronouns like 'i', and minor prepositional tracking errors like 'close by to'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and your meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards a higher level, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences by polishing your control over capitalization, punctuation, and minor grammatical patterns, demonstrating more consistent accuracy across both simple and complex structures.
