Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well!

I am writing to tell you that I can help you out for a few hours a day, since I will be on summer break next year. Although I am not an expert in everything, I can surely assist you with cleaning and laundry. I also hold a driver's licence and would certainly help with shopping as needed.

I have a college project to complete to graduate, which requires me to do volunteer work in the neighborhood. Therefore, I think this would be a perfect opportunity for me. Additionally, I would learn English from you as well to improve my communication skills.

Just to let you know, I would not be able to come on weekends because I go to meet my grandparents who live in the countryside. They live alone and need my assistance with shopping and other related work.

I look forward to your response.

Kind Regards,

Manish

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully address all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You suggest specific ways to help around the home, such as cleaning, laundry, and shopping using your driver's licence. You also clearly explain why you would like to do this work, mentioning your college project requirement and your desire to improve your English communication skills. Furthermore, you state your availability by noting you are free during weekdays over the summer, while specifying your unavailability on weekends due to visiting your grandparents in the countryside. The overall purpose of the letter is clear and maintained throughout. To achieve an even higher score, some of these ideas could be extended further with additional supporting details or elaboration on how your assistance would benefit Mrs Barrett directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression from beginning to end. You use paragraphing appropriately, dedicating each paragraph to a specific aspect of your message, such as your proposed help, your motivation, and your availability. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with transition markers like 'Additionally' and 'Therefore' helping to connect your ideas smoothly, although slightly more variety in your cohesive links could enhance the flow further. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow your narrative without confusion. To move to a higher band, ensure that all transitions feel completely natural and tightly integrated into the structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this general task, successfully conveying your message with functional terms like 'driver's licence', 'communication skills', and 'volunteer work'. You make some attempts at less common vocabulary, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as writing 'go to meet my grandparents' instead of a more idiomatic collocation like 'visit my grandparents'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and your lexical choices do not impede communication at all. To reach a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items and precise collocations to add greater flexibility and style to your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation, utilising a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively. You produce frequent error-free sentences, such as 'Although I am not an expert in everything, I can surely assist you with cleaning and laundry.' Your verb tenses and modals are generally handled with accuracy, reflecting future intentions and present realities correctly. While a few minor slips may persist, your grammatical structures are clear and never impede communication. To push towards the highest bands, you would need to showcase an even wider range of complex grammatical structures with consistent flexibility and complete accuracy across the entire text.
