Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter regarding the advertisement for house help.

My name is Shraddha. I saw you poster about short time help for daily house tasks during the Summer. So, for my next term education fees I want to apply for this job. I do have experience of this job. I do part time job during the weekends. I will do daily house task such as cleaning floor, toilet, kitchen and garden. Also, laundry, taking care of indoor outdoor plants and chopping in the kitchen.

As I know, you are the English speaker so it will help me to improve my speaking and polish my communication. I would like to inform you that my work timing is morning to evening weekdays and weekends until morning only. We will discuss further time and work after your confirmation. I am sending my work reference with you on other page.

I am looking forward for your answer.

Your faithfully,

Shraddha.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully suggesting how you could help around the house, stating why you want the job, and explaining your availability. You mention specific tasks such as 'cleaning floor, toilet, kitchen and garden' and note that working with an English speaker will 'improve my speaking and polish my communication.' However, some ideas remain under-developed. For example, your explanation of availability ('my work timing is morning to evening weekdays and weekends until morning only') is a bit confusing and lacks precision, which is typical of a response at this level where requirements are met but certain points lack thorough elaboration. To reach a higher level, you should expand fully on all bullet points with clearer detail and extended supporting explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, properly opening with 'Dear Mrs Barrett,' and closing with 'Your faithfully, Shraddha.' Paragraphing is used to separate your introduction, main body points regarding duties and motivations, and your conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'So, for my next term education fees' is slightly abrupt, and the referencing in 'I am sending my work reference with you on other page' is awkward. Progression throughout the text is acceptable, but the logical flow between sentences could be smoother. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and that ideas flow into one another without abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your basic meaning. You attempt some less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'advertisement for house help' and 'polish my communication.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'you poster' instead of 'your poster', 'short time help' instead of 'part-time help' or 'temporary help', and 'education fees' rather than 'tuition fees'. Additionally, there is an inappropriate sign-off phrase ('Your faithfully' instead of 'Yours faithfully'). These vocabulary and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher rating. Expanding your range of precise functional phrases will greatly enhance this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I am writing this letter regarding...' and 'As I know, you are the English speaker so it will help me...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include missing articles ('I saw you poster', 'do have experience of this job'), incorrect prepositions ('with you on other page'), and minor punctuation issues. Sentence structures remain somewhat basic overall, and attempts at more intricate constructions can be slightly clunky. To reach the next level, you should aim for greater accuracy across a wider variety of complex sentence types, ensuring correct use of articles and prepositions.
