Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to you because i saw your advertisement in the newspaper that you are looking for someone to help you with some household chores. I want to express my high interest in this job. I can cook, clean and take care of your garden for you as i already work as a support worker for two houses.
I am looking for an extra income source so that i can pay my school fee. Also, your house is really close to mine house which makes this job more suitable to me. I feel extremely delighted by helping people in their daily lives.
I am available for this job every evening except every other Sunday. I am also attaching my resume to this letter for your reference. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. I will look forward to hear back from you.
Kind regards
Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully address all parts of the prompt by covering the required bullet points clearly. You suggest helpful ways to assist Mrs Barrett, such as cooking, cleaning, and gardening, and you explain your motivations, including earning money for school fees and the convenience of your nearby location. You also specify your availability by stating you are free every evening except every other Sunday. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-extended throughout the letter, establishing a clear purpose and polite tone from the start. To achieve a higher level, you could develop your ideas more fully by adding specific examples or further details regarding your previous experience as a support worker, ensuring that every part of the prompt receives equal depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from start to finish. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your greetings, main points about the job and your availability, and your closing remarks. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'for this job', and 'for your reference' are used adequately to connect your ideas, resulting in a coherent overall arrangement. To move towards a higher band, you could use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing is consistently smooth, avoiding slightly mechanical transitions between your personal motivations and logistical details.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and functional phrases such as 'household chores', 'support worker', and 'extra income source'. Your choice of words allows you to communicate your message effectively, although there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'school fee' instead of the plural 'school fees' and 'to my house' instead of 'to my home'. To reach a higher standard, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures like 'so that i can pay my school fee' and 'if you have any questions'. There is a good mix of sentence types, and your control over grammar is generally solid, though a few minor errors persist, such as capitalization issues with the pronoun 'i' and a slight slip in the final sentence with 'look forward to hear' instead of 'looking forward to hearing'. To achieve a higher score, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor mechanical slips in punctuation and verb patterns.
