Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I am writing this letter to let you know I am interested in helping you in your house work.
I had seen you advertisement in the newspaper on looking for someone to help. I am very good in managing the house as my parents are most of the time at work. I am the one who use to do cleaning, little bit of cooking, laundary and taking care of pets as well. We have a dog whose name is 'Bruno". I have quite experience in fixing appliances as well.
As my summer vacations are coming so, I have lot of time. Working at your place will make me able to help my family financially and let me earn some extra money for me. Moreover, I am planning to buy bicycle so, this money could help.
Talking about my avaiability, I am available any time between 11 am to 4 pm all week. On weekends, I will be focusing on my studies as my exam are coming. Therefore, my weekends are all booked. I will be waiting for you response. I will be attaching my contact details and address with this letter.
Yours Sincerely,
Shivam Bhalla

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task nicely, which satisfies the requirements for this level. You have suggested how you can help around the house by mentioning tasks like cleaning, cooking, laundry, and pet care. You also clearly stated why you want the work, such as earning extra money to buy a bicycle and helping your family, and you outlined your availability from 11 am to 4 pm while noting that weekends are booked due to exams. However, some of these ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, explaining the specific chores or your pet care experience in greater depth would push the response further. To reach a higher level, ensure that every bullet point is explored with richer detail and clearer explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure that addresses each part of the prompt in turn. You used appropriate opening and closing salutations, and some basic cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' help link your ideas together. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in transitions. For example, starting multiple sentences with 'I' in the second paragraph weakens the flow. To move up a band, use a wider and more flexible range of referencing and conjunctions to create smoother logical progression between sentences without relying on repetitive structural patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message to Mrs Barrett. You attempt some less common phrases, such as 'fixing appliances' and 'help my family financially.' However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the text. Examples include writing 'house work' instead of housework, 'you advertisement' instead of your advertisement, 'laundary' instead of laundry, 'quite experience' instead of quite a bit of experience, and 'avaiability' instead of availability. These errors do not prevent your overall meaning from coming across, but they demonstrate the limitations characteristic of this band. To improve, focus on mastering common collocations and checking your spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing shows a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'As my summer vacations are coming so, I have lot of time.' There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('advertisement' instead of an advertisement), incorrect verb forms ('use to do' instead of used to do), redundant conjunction usage ('As... so'), and prepositional issues. For instance, writing 'on looking' instead of looking, and 'waiting for you response' instead of your response. Although these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, meaning the reader can still understand your points clearly. To achieve a higher score, you need to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over articles and prepositions.
