Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Rudresh Patel and I am writing this letter as a response to the advertisement you made. I think I can help you with your household chores next summer. I can cook some delicious food and do the laundry. Also, I can fix anything in the house thats broken. I can even paint your walls if you want me to.

I will be in my senior year starting next fall and we are required to do social work during the summer break so it can be counted towards it. Moreover, i have my grandmother who lives in India and i have not met her since long time. May be spending time with you at your place while I work will make me feel better.

For my availability, I can be there at your home on every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays because I will have my volleyball practice on rest of the days. I will be available before six in the evening on the mentioned days so you can give me a call when you need help and i will be there.

I hope that you accept my request and we meet next summer.

Yours Sincerely,

Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, creating a clear and appropriate tone for a formal letter to a local resident. You covered the first bullet point well by suggesting specific ways to help around the house, such as cooking, doing laundry, fixing broken items, and painting walls. The second bullet point is also addressed with your motivation involving school requirements and family circumstances, though the mention of missing your grandmother in India leans slightly towards personal context rather than focusing strictly on the job. The final bullet point clearly outlines your schedule, specifying that you are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before six in the evening. While all key requirements of the task are met, some ideas could be slightly more extended to reach higher standards, yet your clear purpose and position throughout ensure a solid coverage of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from your opening greeting through to your closing sign-off. You make effective use of paragraphing, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct topic, such as chores, motivation, and availability. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to guide the reader, using transition words like 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'For my availability' to link your thoughts. However, there are minor instances where referencing or transitions feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural, such as 'as a response to the advertisement you made', which prevents the flow from being completely seamless. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message, but it remains fairly basic and general throughout. You attempt some less common phrases like 'household chores' and 'senior year', but much of the vocabulary relies on everyday words such as 'delicious food', 'broken', and 'help'. There are also occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as misspelling the recipient's name as 'Barret' instead of 'Barrett', missing capitalization on the pronoun 'I', and a slight awkwardness in phrasing when you refer to 'the advertisement you made' rather than 'your advertisement'. To improve further, you should incorporate a wider variety of precise, less common lexical items and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures like relative clauses ('who lives in your town', 'who lives in India') and conditional elements. There are a number of error-free sentences, particularly in your opening and closing statements, and your control of verb tenses is generally reliable when discussing future availability. However, a few persistent errors remain, such as missing articles ('on every Mondays'), preposition issues ('since long time' instead of 'for a long time'), and minor punctuation or capitalization slips. These errors do not impede communication, and the meaning of your sentences remains clear, but greater precision in complex patterns is needed to progress further.
