Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing to let you know that I saw your advertisement for a house helper and I am really interested in helping you with your work for a few hours a day next summer.

Let me explain in detail. I have a prior experience of cooking and doing laundry, so I can help you in these chores. I can cook a variety of dishes. You just need to inform me a day before, so I can make the necessary arrangements for it. Moreover, you can trust me with your laundry as well, and I will make sure all your clothes are ironed and hanged in your closet.

I want to do it as a part-time job because I want to arrange my winter semester fee. Next summer I do not have any extra classes at college, so it will be feasible for me to do a part-time job.

I want to inform you that I will be available on weekdays at any time that suits your convenience; however, I will not be available on weekends as I have to carry my father to hospital for his dialysis. Hoping for a positive response from you.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Sara Qureshi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt in a natural and appropriate tone for a general correspondence task. You successfully covered how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering specific assistance with cooking and laundry, explained your motivation to earn money for your winter semester fees, and clearly detailed your availability on weekdays alongside your unavailability on weekends due to family commitments. Your ideas are well-extended and supported with clear details, such as mentioning advance notice for cooking and explaining the reason for your weekend absence. A clear and appropriate letter format is maintained throughout, demonstrating an effective grasp of purpose and audience requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression from your opening statement of interest down to your closing remarks. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from introducing your skills to stating your motivations and finally outlining your availability schedule. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'Let me explain in detail', 'Moreover', and 'however'. While the flow is generally coherent and natural, paragraphing is managed adequately, and referencing is clear throughout, keeping the reader fully engaged with the progression of your ideas without causing any confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common phrasing such as 'necessary arrangements', 'part-time job', and 'convenience'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher evaluation. For instance, writing 'carry my father to hospital' is less natural than 'take my father to the hospital', and using 'hanged' instead of 'hung' for clothes represents a slip in word form. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly and effectively to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You display a good control of grammar and punctuation, utilizing a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. You handle conditional and multi-clause sentences quite well, as seen in structures like 'You just need to inform me a day before, so I can make the necessary arrangements for it.' Grammatical control is generally strong across verb forms, tenses, and prepositions, though a few minor errors persist, such as omitting the article before 'hospital' ('to hospital'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well, ensuring that these occasional flaws never impede overall communication.
