Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter in response to your advertisement for help in your home for next summer.
I can assist you in many things such as housekeeping, gardening and other errands. I can also help you with meal preparing because I love cooking and it is like therapy to me. I am quick learner, so I can adapt with your specific needs.
I am up for this opportunity because I love to socialise and give services to my community. Also I am looking to spend my summers in a meaningful way. I am also keen to improve my English speaking skills and I think this is the best way to do.
I will be available to help from Tuesday to Saturday between 8 AM to 2 PM. I will be not available on Sunday and Monday, as I have to study as well to meet my academic requirements.
Kindly consider my application. Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully address all parts of the task prompt, ensuring the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You cover how you can help by mentioning housekeeping, gardening, and meal preparation, state why you would like to do the work because you enjoy socialising and want a meaningful summer, and clearly explain your availability from Tuesday to Saturday between 8 AM and 2 PM while noting your unavailability on Sunday and Monday. Your ideas are adequately extended and supported, such as explaining that cooking is like therapy and mentioning your academic commitments, demonstrating a clear focus throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter and your proposed assistance in the first body paragraph, to your motivations in the second, and your specific availability in the third. You use appropriate cohesive devices and referencing, such as 'I can also help' and 'Also I am looking', though referencing and transitional phrases are sometimes slightly straightforward rather than flexible. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the letter logically from your opening salutation to the sign-off.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as 'meaningful way', 'academic requirements', and 'housekeeping'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'meal preparing' instead of 'meal preparation', 'quick learner' missing the article 'a', and 'give services' instead of 'provide services'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but refining these collocations and ensuring greater precision in word forms will help you achieve a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over standard structures like conditional and causal clauses, for example, 'as I have to study as well to meet my academic requirements.' There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'I will be not available' instead of 'I will not be available', and missing articles like 'this is the best way to do' instead of 'this is the best way to do it.' These errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid foundation with a few lingering slips.
