Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am Dhvani Tailor, a resident of Navsari, writing this to express my interest in the work which was advertised in the newspaper about helping you at your home in the next summer.

Firstly, I have been working as a house keeping worker for the local people in my home town for the past 5 years. It my expertise now. I am very good in doing house chores quickly. In addition, if required, I can help you with preparing meals too. I am physically fit and can assist you with shifting furniture as well.

It is my passion to help everyone with their arrangements while they are adjusting with the new place. To make them comfortable and give a sense of relaxation, I work hard with the best of my skills. I think, I can assist you with this work in upcoming summer.

Lastly, I would like to work in the evening time as I have many other houses to work for. I would be available every day except on Sundays from 3.00 PM to 5.00 PM. I would be grateful if I get an opportunity to work for you and help you with house duties.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Dhvani Tailor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt. You clearly suggest how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering to do housekeeping, prepare meals, and assist with shifting furniture. You also adequately explain your motivation for wanting to do this work, expressing your passion for helping people adjust to new places, and you outline your availability clearly by stating you are free every day except Sundays from 3.00 PM to 5.00 PM. All three bullet points from the instructions are fully addressed. The ideas are relevant and supported with appropriate details, such as your five years of experience. To reach a higher level, some of these ideas could be extended further with even more specific elaboration on your background, showing a fully developed position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate opening and a clear statement of purpose, move logically through your skills and motivation in the body paragraphs, and conclude with your availability and a standard sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Lastly' are used to structure the text effectively, although paragraphing could be slightly tighter in places. To push into higher bands, you could use a wider variety of referencing and cohesive links that feel entirely natural and unobtrusive rather than relying on standard transition markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message to the reader. You attempt some less common items and specific vocabulary related to the job, such as 'expertise', 'house chores', and 'physically fit'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'working as a house keeping worker' (which should be housekeeper) and 'upcoming summer' (which should be next summer). These occasional errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical profile for this level. To improve, you should focus on more precise lexical collocations and natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures appropriately. There are several error-free sentences, such as your closing remarks and the statement 'I would be grateful if I get an opportunity to work for you'. However, some grammatical errors and awkward prepositions persist throughout the text, including 'very good in doing' (instead of 'very good at doing') and 'in the evening time' (simply 'in the evening'). Punctuation and verb tenses are generally controlled well, but these minor mechanical errors prevent the grammar score from rising further.
