Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I saw an adverstisment about shifting room from down floor to upstairs. I would like to help you for shifting and I also an English-speaking person from London living in Vijayawada from past 12 months. I know how the summer will be in this region and I am happy to help you for few hours.

As I seen the advertisement you will need a person who carry heavy things like double cot bed, dressing table, matress, packed wooden boxes to upstairs. I think my body mass and fitness I can carry 120 pounds of weigh easily. So I think i can help you in your home for room shifting.

I would like to help you because it's been rare to seen an English-speaking person hear in Vijayawada most of the people will speak their native language. As I am a Britisher I believe we can share the conversations and as well as the help you in shifting.

I am available on upcoming weekend on mornings, because evening I need to attend an event which is happening near to your home. So i can commute from your location to the event. If the moving is done you can also attend the event.

Let me know your opinion and looking forward to hear from you.

Your's faithfully,

Damaraka Polisetty.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the main parts of the task, such as offering help with room shifting and mentioning availability, but some aspects are partially covered and ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, while you mention that you want to help carry heavy things like a 'double cot bed, dressing table, matress', the explanation of your availability lacks clarity regarding when you will NOT be available, focusing instead on attending an event on the upcoming weekend. The tone is appropriate for a letter, but the overall development of ideas sits comfortably within this level as points are presented without sufficient elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic logical organisation to your letter, with separate paragraphs attempting to handle different parts of the prompt, such as introducing the purpose, detailing the lifting work, explaining your background, and stating your schedule. However, overall progression is limited and cohesive devices are sometimes repetitive or inaccurate, such as repeatedly using 'As I' or 'So' to link thoughts. Referencing can also be unclear, for instance in phrases like 'If the moving is done you can also attend the event.' Paragraphing is present, but the transitions between ideas could be managed more smoothly to enhance the flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey your message about helping with the house move. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word forms, such as 'adverstisment', 'shifting room from down floor', 'matress', and 'weigh' instead of weight. Less common vocabulary items are attempted, but inaccuracies such as 'body mass and fitness I can carry' or 'rare to seen' cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical control appropriate for this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex clauses that frequently contain errors. There are frequent grammatical mistakes relating to verb tenses, prepositions, articles, and agreement, such as 'I also an English-speaking person', 'living in Vijayawada from past 12 months', 'As I seen', and 'hear in Vijayawada'. Punctuation and sign-offs also contain minor inaccuracies like 'Your's faithfully'. These recurring errors mean that grammatical control is restricted, requiring the reader to occasionally work harder to decipher the intended meaning.
