Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to apply for the job of a house-helper, which you have advertised in the newspaper.
As listed in the job responsiblities, I can prepare meals, wash laundry and look after your children in your absence. I can drive your children to the childcare center as well, if needed as I have a valid drivers license and a clean driving abstract.
I am highly interested in this role because I like to work in the homelike environment, where I can contribute my efforts to assist you in the best way as possible. Also, I have relevent skills and experience needed for this role. I am a reliable, hardworking and a quick learner individual with hands-on experience in working for the similar roles.
I am available to work from 5 am until 8 pm on weekdays and weekends. I am looking forward to hear from you.
Best regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all parts of the communicative task outlined in the prompt. You begin by suggesting how you can help Mrs Barrett around the home by stating that you can 'prepare meals, wash laundry and look after your children.' You also clearly explain why you would like to do this work, noting that you enjoy working in a homelike environment and have relevant skills. Additionally, you mention your availability, stating that you can work from 5 am until 8 pm on weekdays and weekends. However, some of your ideas are slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of your availability lacks detail regarding when you would *not* be available, as you claim to be free during all listed hours without exception. To reach a higher level, you need to expand fully on every bullet point with greater elaboration and clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a clear overall arrangement and follows an appropriate layout for a general correspondence, beginning with a standard salutation and ending with a formal sign-off. You successfully bridge the gap to a higher band by organizing your main ideas into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt. For instance, the second paragraph focuses on how you can help, while the third addresses your motivation and experience. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical. Phrases like 'As listed in the job responsiblities' and 'Also, I have relevent skills' function adequately to link your ideas, but referencing and logical flow could be smoother and more varied to achieve a fully natural progression throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'responsiblities', 'drivers license', and 'hands-on experience'. You communicate your message clearly, but there are some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For example, 'responsiblities' is misspelled, 'relevent' contains a spelling error, and phrases like 'a quick learner individual' or 'working for the similar roles' sound slightly unnatural in standard English collocations. Furthermore, using 'homelike environment' is acceptable, but a more idiomatic or precise lexical choice would elevate the style of your writing. To improve, focus on mastering common collocations and carefully proofreading your work to eliminate basic spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses such as 'which you have advertised in the newspaper' and conditional structures like 'if needed as I have a valid drivers license.' You also show good control over modal verbs and tense consistency. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text. For instance, writing 'a quick learner individual' incorrectly places an indefinite article before a modified noun phrase, and there is a missing comma before the final sign-off phrase 'Best regards'. These errors do not impede communication, but their presence keeps your grammar score at this level. To reach the next band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over minor syntactic patterns.
