Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

My name is Simran. I saw your advertisement for a helper for your home starting next summer.

I can help you in numerous ways, such as cleaning, doing laundry, and vacuuming. I have been doing this for a long time, so I have extensive experience managing these tasks. Not only that, but I also love gardening.

I want to do this work because I can earn some extra money to manage my overhead expenses, and next summer I have some free days every week, which I can utilize productively by working. Along with this, helping others makes me happy.

I am available full-time on weekends, but on weekdays I am busy on Tuesdays, as I am about to start a 6-month course, so I will have a class. If any changes come in future, I will inform you in advance.

I would really appreciate it, if you can provide me with this opportunity.

Yours faithfully,

Simran.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help Mrs Barrett around the home by mentioning cleaning, doing laundry, vacuuming, and gardening. Your motivation for taking on the work—earning extra money for overhead expenses and making productive use of your free time—is well explained. Furthermore, you effectively outline your availability by stating that you are free on weekends while noting your weekday commitments, such as your Tuesday class. All parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear tone and relevant ideas, although some points, such as the specific gardening tasks, could be slightly more extended to reach the highest levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the introduction to the specific help offered, reasons for applying, availability, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Not only that, but I also' and 'Along with this', which help connect your thoughts. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the sequence of ideas from beginning to end without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary choice is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate your message clearly and precisely. You attempt some less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'extensive experience', 'utilize productively', and 'overhead expenses', showing a good awareness of style and collocation. There are occasional minor lexical choices, but these do not impede communication at all. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common idiomatic phrases or precise descriptive verbs related to household chores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating good control of grammar and punctuation. You successfully produce frequent error-free sentences, such as your explanation of weekend availability and your introduction. While there is a minor punctuation slip in the final sentence ('I would really appreciate it, if you can...'), your verb tenses and clause structures are generally accurate and well-managed. Your control over grammatical patterns allows the reader to understand your schedule and intentions without difficulty.
