Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to express my interest regarding your advertisement of house-keeping. As, you are looking someone who can assist you with your daily household chores and to prepare lunch in afternoon . I am living on a walking distance and willing to something to help my living expenses in Canada. Most of my classes are virtual so it would be easy for me to help you.

I am an international student here in canada carrying a expenses on my own but because of less flexibility of classes it is becoming very hard for me to work anywhere else .If you would hire me it would be great help for me as well to bear my own expenses .

I am available to work on weekends for whole day but because of classes i can work only on afternoon and evening in week days. Moreover ,I can work full-time in upcoming summer .

I am looking forward to hear you from soon .

Your faithfully,

Sania

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully address all parts of the prompt, satisfying the main requirements of the task. You suggest how you can help Mrs Barrett by mentioning daily household chores and preparing lunch in the afternoon. You also state why you would like to do this work, explaining that it will help cover your living expenses in Canada. Furthermore, you explain your availability, detailing your weekend schedule, weekday limitations, and full-time availability for the upcoming summer. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of why you want the job leans heavily on your personal financial situation with limited elaboration on the nature of the work itself. To reach the next level, you need to extend and support all your ideas more thoroughly, providing deeper elaboration on each bullet point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure suitable for a semi-formal request. You open with an appropriate salutation and close with a sign-off, organizing the body into paragraphs that correspond to the task prompt requirements. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, referencing and transitional links are occasionally awkward, such as the sudden shift into your financial background in the second paragraph without smooth bridging. Paragraphing is present, but grouping your availability and personal motivations could be managed more fluidly. To achieve a higher band, you should ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally to connect sentences and ideas, establishing a clearer and more seamless progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with terms like 'household chores', 'international student', and 'full-time'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing that reflect a limited resource. Examples include 'advertisement of house-keeping' instead of 'advertisement for housekeeping', 'living on a walking distance' instead of 'living within walking distance', and the awkward construction 'look forward to hear you from soon'. There are also minor spelling and punctuation slips, such as spacing before punctuation marks. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher score. To improve, you should focus on learning natural word combinations and precise vocabulary for common daily situations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses ('who can assist you') and conditional clauses ('If you would hire me'). However, your writing contains several errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, there are tense and modal verb issues in 'it would be great help for me as well to bear my own expenses' (missing articles and awkward phrasing) and 'i can work only on afternoon and evening in week days' (preposition misuse). Capitalization is also inconsistent, particularly with the personal pronoun 'i' and at the beginning of clauses after punctuation marks. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to keep your grammar score at this level. To progress, you need to exercise greater control over articles, prepositions, and basic sentence mechanics.
