Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs. Barret,

I am writing to inquire about an advertisement that you had posted on a social media platform some time ago.

I believe that I may be a standard fit for the required responsibilities that you have posted. This is because I am a multilingual individual who is experienced in doing regular house chores. Also, I do not mind moving around furniture or do heavy lifting.

As I am a student on vacation this summer, I am looking for any available employment or volunteer opportunities. I am seeking this experience largely because it will help me building a valuable resume in the future for my future career opportunities.

Currently, I have an open availability starting June 01, 2027 until August 15, 2027. I will not be available after the above-mentioned dates as I will have to start preparing for my upcoming schedules at the university. Should you have any questions about my availability, please do not hesitate to send me an email.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Megh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, satisfying the core requirements of the task. You effectively suggest how you can help Mrs Barrett by mentioning that you can do regular chores, move furniture, and handle heavy lifting. You also clearly explain why you want to do the work, noting that you are looking for summer employment and experience to build your future resume. Furthermore, your availability is precisely stated with specific start and end dates, and you clarify when you will not be available. While all bullet points are covered, some ideas show a slight tendency toward under-development. For instance, explaining the specific chores in slightly greater detail or expanding more on your motivation would push the response closer to a fully extended level. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, the tone is appropriately polite and formal, and all required information is communicated effectively to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement and logical progression from beginning to end. You begin with a standard appropriate salutation and open with a clear statement of purpose regarding the advertisement. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme: the first introduces your suitability and practical help, the second outlines your motivation, and the third specifies your availability. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas together. Cohesive devices such as 'This is because', 'Also', and 'Currently' are employed to connect your thoughts, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical rather than entirely natural or seamless. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could use a wider variety of subtle linking phrases to bridge sentences and paragraphs more fluidly, ensuring the flow of information feels completely effortless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message while attempting some less common lexical items. Phrases like 'multilingual individual', 'volunteer opportunities', and 'upcoming schedules' show a sensible grasp of vocabulary suited to a formal letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as describing yourself as a 'standard fit' instead of a 'strong fit' or 'suitable candidate', and writing 'help me building' instead of 'help me build'. These occasional slips do not impede communication, but they highlight areas where precision can be improved. To reach a higher standard, you should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise synonyms, ensuring that every word choice sounds completely natural and idiomatic in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully construct complex sentences using subordinate clauses, such as 'As I am a student on vacation this summer, I am looking for any available employment or volunteer opportunities' and 'Should you have any questions about my availability, please do not hesitate to send me an email.' There are some errors in grammar, such as the infinitive mistake in 'help me building' and the slight awkwardness in 'do heavy lifting' instead of 'doing heavy lifting'. However, punctuation is generally well controlled, and these errors rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences while maintaining an even greater variety of complex grammatical structures with consistent accuracy across the entire text.
