Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter regarding the advertisement for a helper that you have posted in "The local times" newspaper last weekend. As per your concerns, I can fulfill the requirements for a few hours a day next summer because I will be on vacation then.
I am very proficient in the English language as I have completed my PhD studies in the English language specifically. This is beneficial for our communication. I am a responsible person with my duties. I can help you with household chores like cleaning, washing, and to organise things. I can also give you a hand in cooking, because I have prepared different cuisines like Italian and Mexican.
Moreover, I would like to do this work because I am keen to learn your culture and really want to experience the life that you are living. Apart from this, it will also help me to enhance my communication and interpersonal skills through this job.
I have my summer vacation from May to September; therefore, I will be available full-time on weekdays, but I will have dance classes on weekends, so I will not be able to work on weekends. I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Ruchi Shah.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you offer cleaning, washing, organising and cooking; explain that you want to learn about Mrs Barrett’s culture and improve your interpersonal skills; and specify availability from May to September, excluding weekends. The examples of Italian and Mexican cooking make your offer more concrete, and the letter maintains a suitable, polite purpose. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly how your English-language background or household experience would benefit Mrs Barrett, rather than mainly stating that it helps communication. Also clarify whether “full-time on weekdays” means you can work for a few hours each weekday, as requested. These small gaps keep some details from being as precise and fully supported as they could be.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the advertisement, describe the help you can offer, explain your motivation, and finish with your schedule and a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Apart from this,” and “therefore” make relationships between ideas easy to follow. At times, however, the transitions feel somewhat formulaic, and the first paragraph combines the advertisement and availability before the main details of your offer. A more direct opening followed by a separate, clearly ordered schedule paragraph would make the organisation feel more natural. Overall, the message is easy to follow, with cohesion used effectively though not always flexibly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, including “proficient,” “household chores,” “cuisines,” and “interpersonal skills.” These choices communicate your qualifications, proposed duties, and motivation clearly. There are also some less natural or imprecise expressions: “fulfill the requirements” is vague, “I am a responsible person with my duties” is awkward, and “the life that you are living” is unnecessarily wordy. “The local times” also needs more natural newspaper-title formatting. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit the precision and naturalness of the language. Aim for straightforward, idiomatic phrases that suit a personal letter rather than formal or translated-sounding wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You show a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including the reason clause “because I will be on vacation then” and the contrast between weekday availability and weekend classes. Many sentences are accurate and punctuation generally helps the reader follow the message. A few grammatical patterns need attention. In “I can help you with household chores like cleaning, washing, and to organise things,” the list should use parallel forms, such as “cleaning, washing, and organising.” The phrase “I am a responsible person with my duties” also has an unclear grammatical relationship; for example, say that you are responsible and reliable. Review parallel construction and sentence phrasing to make your otherwise clear writing more consistently controlled.
