Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I saw your advertisement for house help for few hours next summer in the local newspaper. I am writing this letter to express my interest and to share some details about me.
I am 25 years years old and have the experience of working as a house worker in my home country. I am a certified chef and expert in making continental dishes. Apart from cooking, I was also doing cleaning as a part my of job in my last commitment.
I am now enrolled into the diploma of advanced cooking skills in the nearby college, so I would like to continue a part-time jobs with my studies simultaneously. Your requirement of help just for few hours will help manage my job and education efficiently.
As my classes are starting on 1st June 2026, I will be available in the evening time from 4pm to 8pm. However on weekend, I can come whenever you want.
I hope you will give my request careful consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best Regards,
Fazal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and maintain a clear, polite purpose throughout. You explain that you can cook and clean, give your reasons for seeking part-time work alongside your studies, and specify evening availability from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. after classes begin on 1 June. The weekend offer adds useful detail. Your experience and chef qualification support your suitability, although the actual help you could provide could be developed further—for example, by naming particular household tasks or saying how often you could do them. The availability could also be clearer about whether you are free before 1 June. Overall, the letter fulfils the task with relevant, supported ideas, though a couple of details remain general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce your interest, describe your experience, explain your motivation, and then set out your availability. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these distinct points, and links such as “Apart from cooking” and “However” make relationships between ideas clear. The closing is appropriate for a formal enquiry. To make the progression even smoother, connect your qualifications more directly to the specific help Mrs Barrett needs, rather than moving from cooking and cleaning to your studies without explaining how these fit her household. The phrase “I am writing this letter” also repeats the purpose already evident from the opening. Overall, cohesion is effective, with some room to make links less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for this letter, including relevant terms such as “certified chef,” “continental dishes,” “part-time,” and “careful consideration.” These choices communicate your experience and purpose clearly. However, some word combinations and forms are inaccurate or unnatural, including “house worker,” “last commitment,” and “continue a part-time jobs.” “For few hours” also needs a more natural expression. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use familiar collocations for domestic work and employment, and check whether nouns should be singular or plural. More precise descriptions of the household tasks you can perform would also strengthen the vocabulary used for this particular situation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “so I would like to continue…” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, and the time reference to classes starting on 1 June is clear. Some grammatical errors remain, such as the repeated “years” in “25 years years old,” the missing article in “as a part my of job,” and the plural mismatch in “a part-time jobs.” The sentence about your previous work also shifts awkwardly between past continuous and a completed job. Review articles, plurals, and verb forms, and proofread for accidental word repetition. These corrections would make your otherwise clear sentences more accurate.
