Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Nirma and I live in the street number 04, next to Mr. Umer's house. I read your advertisement about hiring a teenager to help you in your home the next summer.
You daughter Clair is my younger sister's best friend, and she has visited our home a few times. Since you need someone to help you with your daughter's homework and play with her, I believe I would be a suitable person for this job. Being an elder sister of two young siblings has trained me very well to handle children. I hold an excellent academic record, so helping your daughter with her homework would be not be an issue for me.
I will be graduating from high school by the end of next year. Therefore, I want to start a part time job next summer to save some money to able to afford a trip to the disney world with my friends.
I will be available the whole week except the sunday evenings. I am a member of a volunteer community group, whose official sessions will start next summer on sunday evenings.
Please let me know if you need any additional details. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Nirma Shaheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you suggest helping with homework and playing with Mrs Barrett’s daughter, explain that you want to save for a trip, and specify that you are unavailable on Sunday evenings. Your reasons are relevant and supported—for example, you connect your experience with younger siblings to caring for a child. The purpose and polite tone are clear throughout. To make the response more fully developed, give a little more detail about the practical help you could offer around the home, since the task asks how you could help in her home and your examples focus mainly on her daughter. You could also clarify the proposed working period more precisely than “the whole week.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: introduction, suitability for the role, motivation, availability, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow each part of the letter, and links such as “Since” and “Therefore” show how ideas relate. The progression is easy to understand, with no distracting repetition. To strengthen cohesion further, connect your experience with children more directly to the specific duties you would undertake, and make the transition from your motivation to your schedule slightly smoother. The reference to “your daughter” is understandable, though a more direct explanation of the household tasks would make the central paragraph feel more complete and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant phrases such as “suitable person for this job,” “excellent academic record,” and “volunteer community group.” These choices communicate your experience and circumstances clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some wording is less natural or precise, including “the next summer,” “a few times,” and “save some money to able to afford.” There are also spelling and capitalization slips in “Clair,” “sunday,” and “disney world.” Greater control of collocations and proper nouns would make the letter sound more fluent and polished. Try choosing precise expressions for the work you can do, rather than relying mainly on general descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, such as “Since you need someone to help you with your daughter’s homework and play with her, I believe I would be a suitable person for this job.” Most sentences are clear, and you use subordinate clauses and time expressions effectively. A few grammatical errors remain: “your daughter” should be “your daughter” only if referring to one child, but the earlier “You daughter” needs the possessive “Your”; “would be not be” contains an extra “be”; and “to save some money to able to afford” needs “to be able to afford.” Review possessives, infinitive patterns, and sentence-level proofreading. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your varied sentence structures.
