Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.

Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear madam,

I hope you are having wonderful days. I'm writing in response to your advert about need of helper at home for next summer. I'm residing at clock street near prisma mall, very close to your location, this point forces me to consider your request.

As I'm a multitasking woman and you will find me compatible for all kinds of households like cleaning and tidying to daily errands. Not even I'm good enough in cooking but also expert in bakery items. I had been running a bakery since very long but could not proceed due to lack of investment. You can feel free to take some guidance whenever you want.

I had heard from neighbours about your English speaking skills when preparing for IELTS and need someone to speak with. Now I think it's a great way to help eachother like a conversation that makes feel at home to both of us. Moreover, I'm saving money for my exam fee and your assistance would definitely come up with ease.

Regarding my availability, I will be free from 1st June to 31st August. I am available on weekdays from 9am to 4pm. I will not be available on weekends due to my family commitments.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer cleaning, tidying, errands and cooking; explain that you want to practise English and save for your exam fee; and give a clear summer period and weekday hours, while ruling out weekends. These details make the purpose of the letter clear. The offer to help with IELTS conversation is a relevant extra, although the reference to neighbours and Mrs Barrett’s English skills is not fully explained, and the reason for wanting the work could be developed more directly. The opening also does not follow the requested “Dear Mrs Barrett” greeting. You already provide a clear, relevant response; to make it more complete, explain your motivation and the practical help you can offer with slightly more precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a sensible overall sequence: you introduce your interest, describe possible duties, explain your motivation, and finish with availability and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “Regarding my availability” guide the reader. Some links are less clear or feel mechanical, however. For example, “this point forces me to consider your request” does not clearly connect your location to your suitability, and “Not even…” makes the relationship between cooking and baking difficult to follow. The sentence about neighbours, IELTS and speaking also combines several ideas without a clear progression. Use simpler links between related points and make pronouns and references explicit to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the letter, including “multitasking,” “daily errands,” “bakery items,” “family commitments” and “assistance.” These choices help communicate your skills and circumstances, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “advert about need of helper,” “compatible for all kinds of households,” and “come up with ease.” “Wonderful days” and “forces me to consider” also do not sound natural in this context. These inaccuracies show that you are attempting varied vocabulary, but collocation and phrasing are not consistently controlled. Prefer familiar, precise expressions and check whether words naturally combine in English; this will make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “I had been running a bakery…” and the sentence beginning “Moreover,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect accuracy. For example, “I'm writing in response to your advert about need of helper” is missing articles, while “Not even I'm good enough in cooking but also expert…” has faulty construction and an incomplete parallel structure. “a conversation that makes feel at home” also lacks a clear subject and object. Tense choices such as “I had heard” are not well suited to describing what you currently know. Practise complete sentence patterns, articles and parallel forms, and proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
