Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in helping you in your household works, as I saw your advertisement.

To begin with, I can help you with palnty of tasks because I am good at multitasking. Also, I enjoyhelping other people because it helps to built a strong sense of community. Currently, I am on my holidays, I have a planty of time to help you and I am the only person in our neigborhood who speaks English.

I would prefer to take on this work to earn some money for my college fees which are due in a couple of months. In addition, I prefer to spend my time productively and gain experience whenever I get a chance. Therefore, I believe it will be a win-win situation for both of us.

I would be available throughout summer except Fridays and Sundays because I have tennis classes on those days. However, I would prefer to work in evenings on these days so I can help you after my trainnig sessions.

Hope to hear back from you. Enjoy rest of your day.

Yours sincerly,

Sonia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer help with household tasks, explain that you want to earn money for college fees and use your time productively, and give your summer availability. The reasons for wanting the work are clear, and the letter is relevant throughout. However, the offer of help remains general: “plenty of tasks” does not tell Mrs Barrett what you could actually do, such as cleaning, cooking, or shopping. The availability also needs clarification: you say you are unavailable on Fridays and Sundays, then say you would prefer to work on those evenings. This covers the task, but some details are less fully developed or clear than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement, with separate paragraphs for your offer and circumstances, your reasons, and your availability. Linking phrases such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “Therefore” help show how ideas relate, and the closing is appropriate. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Currently, I am on my holidays, I have a plenty of time” joins two complete ideas with only a comma, while the shift from being unavailable on Fridays and Sundays to preferring evening work on those days makes the schedule difficult to follow. Clarifying that you are unavailable during the day but free after training would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “multitasking,” “sense of community,” “productively,” and “win-win situation.” These choices show some range beyond basic wording. However, several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “palnty,” “planty,” “neigborhood,” “trainnig,” and “sincerly.” Some phrases are also unnatural for this context: “household works” would be better expressed as “household chores” or “household tasks,” and “built a strong sense” should be “build a strong sense.” More accurate spelling and natural collocations would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “because I have tennis classes on those days” and the purpose clause “so I can help you.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. “Currently, I am on my holidays, I have a plenty of time” is a comma splice; use a full stop or a conjunction, and remove “a” before “plenty.” In “it helps to built,” the verb should be “build.” The sentence about being unavailable on Fridays and Sundays conflicts with the following sentence about working on those evenings, so make the time distinction explicit. These are areas to refine while retaining your varied sentence structures.
