Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to let you know that I saw your advertisement 3 days ago, and I would like to help you next summer.

To begin with, I can do several types of work, as mentioned below. Preparing daily meals, caring for plants, and organising your children's play area. I would like to do this work because I enjoy cooking a variety of dishes and sharing them with others. I assure you that I will put forth my best effort. Furthermore, next summer I have a school vacation; as a result, I want to utilize my time and earn money for my next tuition fees.

In addition to this, I want to inform you that I am planning to go on a trip to Manali during the summer vacation, which might be for 5 days, from 1st May to 5th May. Consequently, on those specific dates, I will be unable to come. I will make sure to attend work on all the remaining days.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you offer to prepare meals, care for plants and organise the children’s play area; explain your enjoyment of cooking and need to earn money for tuition; and give specific dates when you will be away. The purpose and your willingness to work are clear throughout, and the details about your trip make your availability easy to understand. To strengthen the response further, develop the practical offer a little more—for example, mention any relevant experience or ask which household tasks Mrs Barrett would prioritise. The reasons for wanting the work are relevant, though the connection between your cooking interest and the other duties could be explained more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression from your offer, to your reasons, and then to your availability. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition to this” help the reader follow the letter. The closing is also appropriate and completes the communication. Some linking phrases are more formal or conspicuous than necessary for a personal letter, particularly “Consequently” before the dates you cannot work. The sentence beginning “To begin with” also introduces a list as a separate fragment, which slightly interrupts the flow. Aim for smoother connections and integrate the list into a complete sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to explain household duties, motivation and availability, including “preparing daily meals,” “caring for plants” and “tuition fees.” There is some flexibility in expressions such as “put forth my best effort,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. However, a few choices sound overly formal or less natural in this friendly letter: “utilize my time” and “Consequently” are examples. “Organising your children's play area” is understandable, but a more specific description could make your offer more precise. To show stronger control, favour natural, task-appropriate phrasing and vary the vocabulary for the work you can do rather than relying on general expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex structures, and many sentences are accurate, such as “I would like to do this work because I enjoy cooking a variety of dishes” and the sentence explaining your trip dates. Your use of future forms and clauses is generally controlled. One noticeable structural issue is “To begin with, I can do several types of work, as mentioned below. Preparing daily meals, caring for plants, and organising your children's play area.” The final part is a sentence fragment; attach the list to the preceding sentence, for example, “I can help with several tasks, including preparing meals, caring for plants and organising the play area.” Review punctuation and sentence boundaries so that lists are incorporated into complete sentences.
