Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I heard that you wanted someone to help you this summer, and I wanted to express my availability. It would be an honor for me to assist you in ways I can.
I can do maintenance work efficiently. I have recently painted my room and realized that I can paint very well. It felt good afterwards and I could do the same at your house if you'd like. I am also handy with basic plumbing in case you have something to be fixed in your kitchen sink or lines.
Working on these things helps me keep engaged in physical activity and subsequently brings out the creative thinker hiding inside me. I can do these during evenings, since I will working at the office until 4pm. I'd like to rest and learn on Sundays. For first 3 days of the week, I am occupied with work related tasks, therefore, I will only be available to work Thursday through Saturday. Also, I can work any time on Saturdays since I am off work during weekends.
Please let me know if I can be helpful, and my schedule alings with you needs. Feel free to call me if you have questions.
Regards,
Saif

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you offer painting and basic plumbing, explain that the work keeps you physically active and creatively engaged, and give availability details. This meets the core task well. The practical suggestions are relevant, but the reasons for wanting the job are more personal than work-focused and could be developed by explaining, for example, what skills or experience you would bring. Your schedule is also somewhat unclear: you say you can work “during evenings” and “Thursday through Saturday,” then add that you are free “any time on Saturdays.” Clarify the exact hours and whether Thursday and Friday evenings are included. These details would make the letter more fully developed and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph about the help you can provide, a paragraph covering motivation and availability, and a polite closing. This makes the main information easy to locate. However, the third paragraph combines several ideas, and the schedule is not presented in a fully logical or consistent way: “during evenings,” “Thursday through Saturday,” and “any time on Saturdays” overlap without specifying exact hours. The link “therefore” is understandable, but the relationship between your work commitments and the days available could be stated more directly. Separate motivation from availability, and use a simple day-by-day sequence to improve progression and clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the letter, including relevant terms such as “maintenance work,” “basic plumbing,” and “available.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “brings out the creative thinker hiding inside me,” although this sounds rather elaborate for a practical job enquiry. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “help you in your home” is less idiomatic than “help around your home,” and “my schedule alings with you needs” contains a spelling error and an awkward phrase. “Lines” is also vague when referring to plumbing. Choose direct, natural expressions suited to a polite letter, and proofread spelling and possessives so your meaning remains precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the conditional “if you'd like” and the reason clause beginning “since.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. In “I will working at the office,” the future form should be “I will be working.” “For first 3 days” needs an article (“For the first three days”), and “work related tasks” needs a hyphen when used as a compound modifier. The final sentence also needs grammatical repair: “if my schedule aligns with your needs.” These errors do not prevent communication, but checking verb forms, articles, and sentence endings would improve accuracy while preserving your varied sentence structures.
