Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barret,
This is with reference to your advertisement regarding the requirement of someone to help you around the house during next summer for a few hours a day. I would like to apply for the position considering that I meet the listed requirements.
I have about 4 years of experience in housekeeping specializing in cooking, gardening, laundry, ironing and baking. Moreover, I am also currently a part time nursing student with sufficient experience in basic first aid and healthcare. Since the job description aligns with my current expertise, I believe I can be a suitable match for the job. Also, since I have my vacations during the next summer, I believe I can be comfortably avaliable to do the job.
I have volunteered multiple times in my career for humanitarian causes and worked with several non-profit organizations. I have always enjoyed helping others and therefore this job perfectly aligns with my long term career and personal goals. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to be helpful to you in any way that I can.
I will be avaliable from Monday to Saturday from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. I won't be able to work on Sundays as I have my classes for the whole day, however, I can adjust my schedule if provided with a 2 day advance notice.
I am looking forward to hear from you soon. In case of any further information required, please feel free to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Sana Munir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you describe household skills such as cooking, gardening and laundry, explain your motivation through your enjoyment of helping others, and give specific working hours and a day you cannot work. Your four years of experience and nursing studies also make your application relevant and credible. The explanation of why you want the work is supported by your volunteering, although the link to your “long term career and personal goals” remains somewhat general. Availability is mostly clear, but saying you can adjust your schedule with two days’ notice could be clarified so Mrs Barrett knows whether this applies to Sundays too. Overall, the letter fulfils its purpose and develops the main points, with a little room for more precise detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from the application, to your qualifications and motivation, then to availability and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Since,” and “therefore” make relationships between ideas clear. The sequence is logical, though some transitions feel formulaic because several sentences begin with “I” or use “I believe.” The availability paragraph also combines a firm Sunday restriction with an offer to adjust your schedule, leaving the relationship between those points slightly unclear. A more direct transition into your schedule and a clearer reference to what can be adjusted would make cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a good range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “housekeeping,” “basic first aid,” “humanitarian causes,” and “non-profit organizations.” These choices communicate your experience and motivation clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal application. Some wording is less natural or precise: “the requirement of someone” is awkward, while “comfortably available” and “perfectly aligns” sound overly formal or emphatic in context. There are also spelling errors in “Barret” and “avaliable,” and “long term” should be written as “long-term” when used before a noun. More natural collocations and careful proofreading would make your vocabulary more consistently accurate and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses in “Since the job description aligns…” and “as I have my classes for the whole day.” Many sentences are grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few errors remain: “I am looking forward to hear from you” should be “looking forward to hearing from you,” and “during next summer” would be more natural as “during the summer” or “next summer.” The sentence beginning “I won't be able to work on Sundays” is understandable, but its contrast with the offer to adjust your schedule could be expressed more precisely. Continued attention to verb patterns and natural phrasing would strengthen accuracy.
