Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I saw your advertisement for someone to help in your home for a few hours a day next summer. I am very keen in working at your place as I have 10 years experience at managing household work. I can cook all asian, italian and continental cuisines. I can communicate very well in english. I can very well manage all household tasks including cleaning, washing, doing grocery and organising family gatherings.
I would like to do this work as your place is very nearby . I'm interested in earning some extra money, gaining some experience, and doing something useful with my spare time .I'm reliable, punctual, and willing to learn
I will be available for few hours weekday mornings next summer. However, I won't be available in the evenings or on weekends because of other commitments.
Thank you for considering my application. Please let me know if you need any further information. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Maneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you describe household help such as cooking, cleaning, washing, grocery shopping and organising gatherings; explain your interest in earning extra money and using spare time productively; and specify weekday-morning availability while ruling out evenings and weekends. Your experience and reliability also support your application, so the letter’s purpose is clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, give a little more detail about the hours you could work or which tasks you are especially confident doing. The reason that the home is nearby is relevant, but could be connected more explicitly to why this arrangement would suit you. The response is on task and appropriately framed as a letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you refer to the advertisement, present your skills, explain your motivation, state your availability, and close politely. The paragraphs help separate these functions, and transitions such as “However” make the contrast in your availability easy to follow. The list of household tasks is also relevant and understandable. To strengthen cohesion further, connect some of the short points more smoothly rather than presenting several claims in quick succession—for example, link your experience directly to the tasks you can undertake. A few spacing and punctuation inconsistencies interrupt the otherwise clear presentation, but the overall organisation and progression remain easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a domestic-work application, including “reliable,” “punctual,” “commitments,” and “organising family gatherings.” These choices communicate your skills and motivation clearly. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “keen in working” would be more naturally phrased as “keen to work,” and “doing grocery” is better expressed as “grocery shopping.” “All asian, italian and continental cuisines” is understandable, but the cuisine list and its punctuation could be presented more precisely. To move beyond this level, use a wider range of natural collocations for household duties and describe your experience with more specific vocabulary, while checking spelling and spacing conventions such as capitalising “Asian” and “Italian.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your meaning is generally clear, and you use both simple statements and a more complex explanation of availability, including “because of other commitments.” The closing sentences are also controlled and appropriate. However, some grammatical errors remain. In “I am very keen in working,” the preposition and verb pattern should be “keen to work”; “I have 10 years experience” needs a possessive form (“10 years’ experience”); and “available for few hours” requires an article (“for a few hours”). The sentence beginning “I can very well manage” also has an awkward adverb position. Review articles, possessives, and verb patterns, and proofread punctuation and spacing. More consistently accurate sentence structures would improve control.
