IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.
Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter
- suggest how you could help her in her home
- say why you would like to do this work
- explain when you will and will not be available
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing in response to your recent employment advertisement regarding house helper for next summer.
I could be helpful in multiple ways as a household worker. Firstly, I can assist you for gardening, as I had been working as a lawn mover for a year. Secondly, I can maintain cleanliness in the living area, including sweeping and moping.
I am particularly interested in the opportunity because it allows flexible schedule, which is my primary requirement to spare more time for study. Also, the location is just a walking distance from my house, that reduce the expenses related to transportation. Because of these reasons, I am applying for the opening.
Although I will be available anytimes for weekends, some of the weekdays I will be occupied. Particularly, I will not be able to work on mondays and thursdays at anytime. However, I can only work on evenings on any other weekdays.
I believe, you will not have any issue related to my availability. I am looking forward to your positive response to the application.
Kind regards,
Dhaval Prajapati

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you offer gardening and cleaning help, explain that flexible hours would support your studies and that the location is convenient, and specify both unavailable days and the evenings you can work on other weekdays. These details make your application relevant and your purpose clear. The reasons for wanting the job are supported, although the practical benefit of the flexible schedule could be explained more specifically, and your closing assurance about availability is rather general. To strengthen the letter further, add a brief detail about your experience or the tasks you could take responsibility for, and make the availability arrangements especially precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to the help you can offer, your reasons for applying, and your schedule. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “However” help the reader follow the points. The overall organisation is logical and easy to understand. Some linking is a little formulaic, particularly the repeated use of “Because of these reasons” after the explanation and “I believe” before the closing assurance. You could make the flow more natural by varying transitions and connecting related details more directly, while keeping the clear paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “household worker,” “gardening,” “living area,” and “availability.” You also attempt more formal expressions, including “employment advertisement” and “transportation.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “lawn mover” does not name the person doing the work, “moping” is not the intended cleaning term, and “at anytimes” is not idiomatic. “Flexible schedule” also needs an article in this context, though that is a grammar point. Choose precise, natural phrases for domestic tasks and availability, and check spelling and collocation carefully to make your meaning more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the reason clause “because it allows…” and the contrast introduced by “Although.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the sentence structures communicate the main points. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “which is my primary requirement” would be more natural as “which is a primary requirement,” and “that reduce the expenses” has a subject–verb agreement error; use “which reduces expenses.” The availability sentence beginning “Although” is also awkwardly constructed, and “I believe, you will…” has unnecessary punctuation. Review articles, agreement, and clause structure, especially in longer sentences, to improve accuracy.
