Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well today, I just sae your advertisement for a help in your home.

I am writing this letter to suggest you about the help you needed in your home. I think I can help you for your house this summer, I have my summer break going on and to be honest I love to help you and enjoy it too. And plus I am so fast and can do things easily because I am not so big.

Moreover, I am trying to know how much help you needed this summer, and what is important things we have to do first when you come to live in a town because I just want to make sure I am available for you. However, so sorry but I am not available weekends, I have plans with my friends and if this works for you please contact me.

Thank you,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You make a relevant attempt to offer help and explain your motivation, mentioning that you have a summer break and enjoy helping. You also state that you are unavailable at weekends. However, the task is only partially addressed: you do not specify what household duties you could do, and your availability on weekdays or at particular times is not explained. The question about what help Mrs Barrett needs does not replace a clear offer of services. Your reason for wanting the work is present but brief, and the letter’s purpose becomes less clear when you refer to her “come to live in a town.” To strengthen the response, name practical tasks, give specific available days or hours, and develop your reason for applying.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a recognisable opening, body and closing, and the ideas broadly follow the task: you introduce your interest, discuss the work, then mention weekend unavailability. However, there is no clear overall progression because several points are combined in long sentences, and the second paragraph shifts from asking about duties to an unclear reference to Mrs Barrett coming to town. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “And plus” are used mechanically or awkwardly rather than showing precise relationships. Organise the letter into focused paragraphs—for example, one for the tasks and motivation and another for your schedule—and use clear transitions to connect each point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general purpose, with relevant expressions such as “summer break,” “available,” and “plans with my friends.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, which can make the reader pause. For example, “a help” and “help you for your house” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “I am not so big” is unclear in this context. The spelling error “sae” also affects accuracy. Use more precise household vocabulary, such as “cleaning,” “cooking,” or “running errands,” and choose natural phrases such as “help around the house” and “I am available.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use basic structures to communicate your intentions, but the range is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. The opening joins two independent clauses with only a comma: “I hope you are doing well today, I just…” The sentence beginning “I think I can help…” also runs several ideas together, making the relationships between them unclear. Other problems include “what is important things” and “how much help you needed,” where agreement and verb forms are inaccurate. These errors sometimes make the message difficult to follow. Practise separating complete ideas into sentences, checking singular/plural agreement, and using consistent verb forms in questions and explanations.
