Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
The intent of this correspondence is to bring your attention to this matter and seek an appropriate resolution. I saw your recent job posting for next summer, I am please to apply for this job.
Regarding this job I would like to highlight a few important observation. Recently I am studying, but my summer vacation will start in May. I can help you with household chores. I consider my self highly organised and tidy. On top of that I have a great interpersonal skills. Furthermore, I used to work as a cook at restaurant, thus I will manage all cooking during working time.
To add to this, I would love to do this job for an extra income. Nevertheless, my plan was only relaxing and spending time with my friends but I want to grow financially. I would like to collect money for my upcoming semesters.
Additionally, I am available to work on Monday to friday, 9 am to 4 pm. I might be not able to work on holidays.
I extend my appreciation for your consideration and I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Maitri Bavarva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you offer help with household chores and cooking, explain that you want extra income for your studies, and give working days and hours. These details make the purpose clear. However, some parts are less fully addressed than others. Your availability is specific for weekdays, but “I might be not able to work on holidays” is uncertain and does not clarify whether you are unavailable on particular dates or all public holidays. The offer of help could also be more tailored by naming other tasks or asking which duties Mrs Barrett needs most. The opening and closing are very formal for a personal job enquiry; a direct, friendly application would suit the situation better.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your application, describe your suitability, explain your motivation, and then state your availability. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Additionally” show how points relate. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the ideas do not flow naturally. For example, “To add to this” introduces your motivation after the work experience, while “Nevertheless” creates an unexpected contrast between relaxing with friends and wanting income. The opening also refers vaguely to “this matter” and “an appropriate resolution,” which does not connect clearly to the job advertisement. Use simpler transitions and make each paragraph’s purpose explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “household chores,” “interpersonal skills,” “extra income,” and “upcoming semesters.” You also attempt more formal expressions, but some are unnatural or poorly matched to a personal application: “the intent of this correspondence,” “an appropriate resolution,” and “your valued response” sound overly bureaucratic. There are also word-choice and form errors, such as “important observation” where a plural is needed, and “I am please to apply.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they reduce naturalness and precision. Prefer straightforward, polite language and check common collocations when describing your experience and reasons for applying.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “I consider myself highly organised and tidy” and the clause beginning “but I want to grow financially.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I saw your recent job posting for next summer, I am please to apply” joins two independent clauses with a comma and has an incorrect verb form; “Recently I am studying” uses an unsuitable tense; and “I might be not able” has incorrect word order. There are also agreement and article problems in “a great interpersonal skills.” Improve control of verb forms, sentence boundaries, and agreement, while retaining your attempts at varied sentence structures.
