Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this in response to your advertisement regarding help in your home. I am very keen to apply for this role as I enjoy assisting members of our local community and have ample free time.
Since, I am a part-time student in the University of Toronto, I have plenty of free time during the evening. I could help you in maintaining the backyard aesthetics, watering the plants and taking care of them.
As I am pursuing short term horticulture course focusing on landscape and floriculture, performing these tasks will help me understanding the practicality of the subject and enhance my understanding of the concepts deeply.
I have classes every day from 9 am to 3 pm. So I will not be able to help you in the daytime. However, in the evening, I have full availability and can help you in maintaining and beautifying your backyard lawn. Moreover, I have experience in carpentry and can make more planters, provided the lumber and hardware.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Amitoz Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you offer gardening and plant care, explain that the work would give practical experience for your horticulture course, and state that you are unavailable during classes but free in the evening. The carpentry offer adds a useful extra contribution. Your purpose and interest are clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant and supported with specific details. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the exact hours or days you could work and whether your evening availability applies throughout the summer. You could also connect your community-minded motivation more directly to the practical reasons for applying.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce your application, describe the help you can provide, explain your motivation, and then set out your availability. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Moreover” help the reader follow the shift from your schedule to additional skills. The closing is appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be more precise: the opening mentions free time, while the next paragraph gives the schedule, so these points partly repeat one another. A clearer transition between your horticulture studies and the gardening tasks would also strengthen the flow. Overall, the organisation is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “horticulture,” “floriculture,” “landscape,” and “carpentry,” which gives the letter useful specificity. Phrases such as “local community” and “full availability” also communicate your intentions clearly. Some combinations are less natural or precise: “maintaining the backyard aesthetics” and “beautifying your backyard lawn” sound awkward, while “provided the lumber and hardware” does not express the condition naturally. “Short term” would usually be hyphenated before a noun. Aim for more idiomatic collocations and a slightly more natural tone, especially when describing household tasks; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a reason clause beginning “Since” and a conditional phrase with “provided.” Most sentences communicate your meaning clearly, and the schedule is expressed in a straightforward way. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening of the second paragraph has an unnecessary comma after “Since,” and “help me understanding” should use the infinitive form after “help” (“help me understand”). In “a part-time student in the University,” the article and preposition pattern is not quite right; use “a part-time student at the University.” The sentence beginning “I have classes” also shifts between future availability and present routine, so keep the time reference consistent. Greater accuracy in these patterns would strengthen control.
