Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter in response to your advert that you are looking for someone to help you in your house next summer. I am willing to come and give you a hand for two to four hours per day. I am happy to come any time of the day that is convinient to you.

I am interested in taking this job because I will be on my summer break from University. Working these few hours will help me boost my savings. University lifestyle can be demanding. I would be grateful, if I get to work for you. This will make a significant impact in my life as this will enable me to afford my expenses at school.

I will be readily available once summer starts. I can work Monday to Friday. I love my weekends, so I will not be available any weekend. I can take any type of job required to do. I am also willing to learn anything that might be new to me.

Looking foward to working with you.

Kind regards,

Ruth

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the three requested points: you offer help for two to four hours a day, explain that you want to work during your university break and save money, and state that weekdays suit you but weekends do not. However, the practical help you could provide is not specified: “I can take any type of job required” leaves Mrs Barrett unsure what tasks you can do. Availability is also somewhat vague because “once summer starts” gives no dates, and saying you can come “any time of the day” is not balanced with a clear schedule. Develop these details by naming household tasks and giving specific start and end dates or daily hours. The purpose is clear, but some parts are less fully addressed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with the opening explaining your offer, the next paragraph giving your reasons, and the final paragraph covering availability and willingness to learn. This creates a logical progression, and the closing is appropriate for a formal letter. Linking phrases such as “because” and “so” make relationships between ideas easy to follow. Some information could be grouped more precisely: the offer of flexible hours appears in the opening, while the specific weekday restriction comes later. Also, “This will make a significant impact in my life” repeats the financial benefit already expressed in the previous sentence. To strengthen progression, keep all scheduling details together and use the space for a more specific description of the help you can offer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes some useful phrases, such as “give you a hand,” “boost my savings,” and “readily available.” The meaning remains clear throughout. However, several choices are vague or slightly unnatural for a job enquiry: “any type of job required to do” does not identify household duties, and “University lifestyle” is less precise than a phrase describing student expenses or demands. There are also spelling errors in “convinient” and “foward,” which detract from accuracy. Aim for more specific household vocabulary, such as cleaning, meal preparation, or shopping, and check spelling carefully. More precise collocations would make the letter sound more confident and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the reason clause in “I am interested in taking this job because I will be on my summer break from University” and the conditional “if I get to work for you.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraphing helps the reader follow the message. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I would be grateful, if I get to work for you,” the comma is unnecessary, and the conditional would be more natural as “if I were able to work for you.” The sentence “I can take any type of job required to do” is structurally awkward; try “I can undertake any household tasks you need.” These occasional issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistent control would improve the letter.
