Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
i have ready your advertisement about needing a house help for a few hours in a day for the coming summer. I live in the same town and I am very interested to work for you.
I am a senior high school student with a lot of experience in managing the household, since I used to help my Mom at home with the chores. I can be a great help specifically in cleaning, doing the dishes and the laundry. I believe with me around, you can maximize your time doing the things you need to do and focus on taking care of your family. I can also cook some dishes so you could have more time to spend with your kids.
I am expressing my interest about this job because I will have an extra free time during the summer. Since it is the school break, I could use the time to earn more money that I can use for the coming school year.
I only have a certain request, if you wouldn't mind. I won't be available during Tuesdays and Thursdays night beacause I also have some tutoring job with another family. But I will be available for the rest of week for you.
I hope you would consider my application and I look forward with working for you. Thank you and have a good day!

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you offer cleaning, dishes, laundry and cooking; explain that you want to earn money for the school year; and specify that Tuesday and Thursday nights are unavailable while other times suit you. The reasons and proposed help are relevant, and the letter maintains a polite, interested tone. The household experience and benefit to Mrs Barrett add useful support, although the benefit to her family is described somewhat generally, and your availability could be more precise about which hours you can work. To strengthen the response further, give a clearer indication of your preferred daily schedule and develop one example of your experience or suitability in more detail. The closing is appropriate for an application letter, though the final request could be phrased more confidently and naturally.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose: introduction, skills, motivation, availability and closing. This creates a logical progression and makes the information easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “since,” “because” and “But” to connect ideas, and the references to Mrs Barrett’s family follow naturally from your offer to cook. Some connections are less smooth: “I only have a certain request” introduces the availability details awkwardly, and “But” at the start of the final availability sentence is slightly abrupt. The letter would feel more polished if you used a conventional transition such as “Regarding my availability” and linked the two schedule statements directly. Overall, paragraphing and progression are clear, with a few cohesion choices that could be more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to explain the job-related ideas, including “household,” “chores,” “laundry,” “tutoring” and “school break.” These choices make your meaning clear, and you show some range by describing both practical tasks and your reasons for applying. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “house help,” “a few hours in a day,” “extra free time,” and “look forward with working.” There is also a spelling error in “beacause.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision expected at a stronger level. Focus on common letter-writing collocations and check spelling; for example, “household assistant,” “a few hours a day,” and “look forward to working” would sound more idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “since I used to help my Mom” and the conditional structure “if you wouldn't mind.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraphing helps the reader follow the message. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening “i have ready your advertisement” has incorrect capitalisation and verb form; “I am very interested to work for you” uses an unsuitable infinitive pattern; and “I look forward with working” has an incorrect preposition pattern. The availability sentence beginning “I won't be available during Tuesdays and Thursdays night” also needs more accurate number and time phrasing. Review verb patterns, prepositions after fixed expressions, and capitalisation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
