Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding an advertisement for home assistance.

Firstly, I can help you in your home cleaning, watering the plants, washing your clothes and also I am a good cook so, I can make your food as well if you want.

Furthermore, I would like to do this work because I want to earn money as I need to pay my college fees. Apart from that, I also like to do houshold chores. With this I am living alone here far from my parents and family so, I will have someone to talk at my free time and I think you will be happy as well to have some to talk and spend time as you are living alone as well.

Finally, I am available every day from 9Am to 4 Pm expect Friday. Because I have my class on that day.

Thank you for your time and patient and I will look forward to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Kajal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you offer cleaning, plant-watering, laundry and cooking; explain that you need money for college fees and enjoy household chores; and give your usual hours while identifying Friday as unavailable. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. Some ideas, however, are less fully developed: the reason about wanting someone to talk to takes up considerable space and assumes Mrs Barrett lives alone, while the practical help you could provide could be described more specifically. The opening phrase “express my concern” does not accurately convey that you are applying for the advertised work. A more direct opening and a clearer explanation of your suitability would make the response more complete and purposeful.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces your interest, lists possible duties, explains your motivation, and then gives your availability. Paragraphing and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow these stages, and the closing is appropriate. This is a coherent arrangement, though the linking can feel somewhat mechanical because each section is introduced with a formulaic transition. The long paragraph beginning “Apart from that” combines several reasons and personal details, making its progression less easy to follow. Consider separating your financial motivation from the social reason, and use more natural links between ideas. Also make the availability sentence connect smoothly to the explanation that Friday is excluded because of class.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “watering the plants,” “college fees,” and “available.” The range is suitable for a personal letter, but some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, which limits clarity and control. For example, “express my concern regarding an advertisement” sounds as though the advertisement worries you, rather than showing interest in the position; “make your food” is less natural than “prepare meals”; and “someone to talk” is incomplete as a phrase. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “houshold” and “patient” where “patience” is intended. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and proofread spelling so your vocabulary communicates your meaning more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, such as the sentence beginning “With this I am living alone here,” and the main message remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, articles, and punctuation. For example, “I can help you in your home cleaning” needs a clearer structure, while “I will have someone to talk at my free time” has an incomplete verb pattern and an awkward prepositional phrase. The sentence beginning “Finally” is a fragment because “Because I have my class on that day” is separated from the main clause. Capitalisation and spacing in “9Am” and “4 Pm” also need attention. Use shorter, complete sentences where needed, and check verb patterns and sentence boundaries.
