Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to help you at home for a few hours a day next summer. I would love to take this opportunity for me.

I would happy to help you for your household duties such as laundry, washing a dishes and preparing simple meals. I could also help you with grocery shopping because I know it is very difficult for you to find some stuffs.

The main reason I would like to do this work is because I need some extra money for myself. Also, I am free in next summer and I enjoy helpin others. Moreover, it is helpful for my skill development and gain practical knowledge.

Reagarding my availabilty, I am availabel from June starting to end of the August. Monday to friday I am able to do work between 9 am to 1 PM. Lastly, I am not available on th weekend because I have my family commitments.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Jency Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer help with laundry, dishes, meals and shopping; explain that you want extra money and enjoy helping others; and give a date range, weekday hours and a weekend restriction. These details make the letter relevant and give Mrs Barrett a clear picture of your offer. The reasons for wanting the work are supported, although “skill development and gain practical knowledge” could be made more specific to this household role. The availability information is useful, but the date range would be clearer if expressed as “from the beginning of June to the end of August.” Overall, the task is fully addressed, with room to develop a couple of details more precisely. (Nine words copied from the task prompt were not counted.)

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you respond to the advertisement, describe the help you can provide, explain your motivation, give your availability, and close politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Also,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” help connect points. The reader can follow the message without difficulty. To make the organisation more natural and flexible, avoid stacking several connectors in the same paragraph and use transitions that show the relationship between ideas. For example, the reasons for applying could be grouped into one concise paragraph, while the availability could be presented in a separate, clearly structured paragraph. This would preserve the logical progression while making the letter feel less like a list.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including household tasks such as “laundry,” “preparing simple meals,” and “grocery shopping.” The tone is generally appropriate for a polite letter. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems make the language less natural: “some stuffs,” “I enjoy helpin others,” and “Reagarding my availabilty” are examples. “Household duties” is understandable, but the list could be expressed more naturally as “household chores.” Aim to learn common phrases as complete units and check spelling carefully, especially in key details such as availability. More precise vocabulary for your motivation would also help you explain how the work relates to your skills or experience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate using both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “The main reason I would like to do this work is because…” and the sentence beginning “I could also help you…”. The overall meaning remains clear, but errors in basic sentence patterns and grammatical forms are noticeable. For example, “I would happy to help” needs the verb “be,” and “washing a dishes” has an incorrect article and plural form. “I am free in next summer” also needs a more accurate article and preposition pattern. Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb phrase, correct articles and singular/plural agreement. Greater accuracy in these common structures, alongside the sentence variety already attempted, would make the letter more polished.
