Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

My name is Shubham Hooda and I am a fellow resident of your town. Recently, I saw you advertisement that stated you want someone to help you around the house during day for a few hours in summers. I am interested in the offer and you might even be impressed with my management skills.

I have experience in household work including indoors and outdoors. I can effeciently do laundry, cleaning, cooking, gardening and even grocery shopping which will require me to go out and still be able to help you while you have your privacy in your home. I have learned all these livelyhood skills not just by doing daily chores at my own house but by studying for them during my Personal support worker(PSW) studies that I am currently doing. I thought it might be a good idea for me to contact you regarding this as it will also help me in getting more experience for my future as I have to take care of people and their needs for my job.

I am available for almost all the summer time excluding the last week in which I plan to take a trip to the Miami with my family before getting back to my studies.

Best Regards

Shubham Hooda

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer household help, explain that your PSW studies and future work motivate you, and identify the final week of summer as unavailable. The examples of laundry, cleaning, cooking, gardening and shopping make your offer relevant and specific. Your reason for applying is also connected to gaining experience in caring for people. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the exact hours or days you could work and give a little more detail about how your PSW training would help Mrs Barrett. The phrase “almost all the summer time” is broad, so a more precise availability statement would make the offer easier for her to assess.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce yourself and respond to the advertisement, describe the help you can provide, explain your motivation, and finish with your availability. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “Recently,” “I thought it might be a good idea” and “as” help connect ideas. The main area to improve is the flow within the long middle paragraph, where your skills, training and motivation are packed together. Separating these into two paragraphs would make each point easier to follow. A more direct closing sentence inviting Mrs Barrett to contact you would also give the letter a clearer finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including “household work,” “gardening,” “grocery shopping,” “privacy” and “experience.” These choices communicate your offer and motivation, and the list of tasks is suitably specific. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “you advertisement,” “during day,” “livelyhood skills” and “take a trip to the Miami.” There are also spelling errors, including “effeciently.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to check spelling and use familiar collocations—for example, “your advertisement,” “during the day,” and “a trip to Miami”—before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which will require me to go out” and the reason clause beginning “as it will also help me.” Most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with articles, prepositions and sentence construction: “during day” needs an article, “in summers” is not the natural time expression here, and “before getting back to my studies” could be expressed more clearly as “before I return to my studies.” The long sentence about your PSW studies also carries several ideas at once, making its structure less controlled. Review article use and break complex ideas into shorter, well-formed sentences.
