Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I saw your advertisement regardng the need of a helper for the upcoming summers. So I am writing to show my interest to work for you during that period, as i am available during my summer vacations.
I have many skills that can be useful for you such as trimming grass, cleaning windows and cooking food. By utilizing these skills, I can minimize your stress and make your home look better.
i am interested to work as a helper becasue i am already looking for a part time job, so i thought working for you can help me earn some money as well.
I will available from 1st june, as my summer vacations are starting from the same date. I can work during the whole month till 30th of june, as my studeis will continue from that same date. I hope you will consider my offer.
I look forward to your prompt reply.
Yours sincerely,
Gurdial Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you offer help with “trimming grass, cleaning windows and cooking,” explain that you want a part-time job to earn money, and give a period of availability. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. However, some parts are less fully explained: the tasks are listed rather than showing how often or in what way you could do them, and the availability is slightly unclear because you say you can work “till 30th of june” while your studies continue “from that same date.” Clarifying whether you are available on the 30th would make this more precise. The reason for wanting the work is understandable, but could be developed with a personal or practical detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your interest, describe possible help, explain your motivation, and then give your availability. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and the closing is appropriate. This logical progression is a strength. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “so” to connect ideas, and “By utilizing these skills” sounds formal and does not connect as naturally as a direct explanation would. The date information also creates a small clarity problem: “till 30th of june” is followed by studies continuing “from that same date.” Use more varied, natural transitions and state the final available day unambiguously to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including practical household tasks such as “trimming grass” and “cleaning windows.” The range is adequate for this letter, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “advertisement regardng the need of a helper” and “interested to work” do not sound idiomatic, while “cooking food” is less natural than a concise task description. There are also spelling errors, including “regardng,” “becasue,” and “studeis,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation of “I” and “June.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would strengthen the vocabulary control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “as my summer vacations are starting from the same date.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “I will available” needs the verb “be,” and “I am interested to work” requires a different grammatical pattern, such as “interested in working.” The sentence about your studies and availability also needs clearer construction, and the lowercase “i” at the start of sentences shows inconsistent punctuation and capitalisation. Check verb forms and sentence patterns, and read the letter aloud to catch missing words. More accurate control of these structures would make your meaning clearer.
