Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter regarding your advertisement and I would be happy to help you in this matter.

Firstly, I can help you with many housechores. I could do groceries so that you can stay at home and relax. Moreover, I can cook a variety of different cuisines as I am avery good chef. After meals, I could wash dishes for you. I hope this will ease the burden on yours shoulders.

I am very keen to help you because I see you as a motherly figure and I respect you alot. You are a humble lady and I love the way you treat others. I would be delighted to assist you in this hour of need.

I would be available in the evening because I have to attend my classes in the morning. Furthermore, I would not be available on weekends because I have to attend the prayer ceremonys. I hope that you would review my letter and send me a prompt response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Anadil Noel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer to shop, cook and wash dishes, explain that you admire Mrs Barrett, and state that you are free in the evenings but unavailable on weekends. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. The practical help is the most fully explained, while your reason for wanting the work is less developed: describing her as a “motherly figure” and saying you respect her explains your feelings, but not clearly what you hope to gain from the work. Availability could also be more precise, such as naming which evenings or dates you can work. The response covers the task well overall, but fuller development of these points would make it more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct purpose: offering help, explaining your motivation, and giving your availability. The progression is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal the sequence of ideas. The opening and closing also suit the format of a formal letter. At times, however, the transitions feel somewhat formulaic, and the final request for a response is not closely connected to the availability details. You could improve the flow by linking related points more naturally and ending with a concise, relevant offer to discuss the arrangement. Overall, the organisation is clear and cohesive, with some room for more flexible linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “housechores,” “a variety of different cuisines,” “ease the burden,” and “delighted to assist.” These phrases help communicate both practical help and a respectful tone. Some choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “housechores” is usually written as “household chores,” “a very good chef” may sound overstated in this context, and “in this hour of need” suggests an emergency that the task does not establish. There are also spelling or form errors in “alot” and “ceremonys.” Aim for natural, precise expressions rather than overly elaborate phrases, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “I could do groceries so that you can stay at home and relax” and “I would be available in the evening because I have to attend my classes in the morning.” This shows an ability to explain reasons and conditions. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, including “I hope this will ease the burden on yours shoulders,” where the possessive form should be “your,” and “I am avery good chef,” which needs a space between the words. The sentence “I would be delighted to assist you in this hour of need” is grammatically formed, though its wording is not well suited to the context. More careful proofreading and a wider variety of sentence patterns would strengthen accuracy.
