Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I am writing this letter to respond to your advertisement regarding assistance required for some hours per day in the upcoming summer.

I could assist you with your basic household work and maintiang lawns by trimming grass regularly. As I have professional experience in grass-cutting, it would remove a lot of workload to maintain a huge garden that you possess at your house. I have also worked in cleaning services for 5 years which would be helpful in cleaning your floors and other surfaces.

I would like help you as I believe in performing community work and providing assistance where I can in the town. In addition, I have project in my course to perform community work which would be fulfilled by providing assistance to you.

My availability is from 4pm to 6pm on week days and from 2pm to 6pm on every weekends. However, I would not be able to help on festivals due to family meetings.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Hari Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer household cleaning and lawn care, explain your community-work motivation, and give specific weekday and weekend hours, as well as noting that festivals are unavailable. The practical details about grass-cutting experience and five years in cleaning help support your offer, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The reason connected to your course is relevant, though it could be explained more fully—for example, how the work would meet the project requirements or benefit your learning. The availability is precise, but naming the summer period or indicating whether these hours apply throughout the season would make the offer more complete. Overall, the main ideas are relevant and supported, with some scope for fuller development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce your response, describe the help you can provide, explain your motivation, and then state your availability. Separate paragraphs make each purpose easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In addition” and “However” help show how ideas relate. The progression is logical and the closing is appropriate. Some connections could be made more smoothly: the shift from community work to the course project is understandable but slightly repetitive, since both points explain the same motivation. You could combine them into one developed explanation. The availability sentence also packs several time details together; clearer phrasing or a short list would make the schedule easier to scan.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “household work,” “trimming grass,” “professional experience,” and “community work.” These choices communicate your offer and motivation clearly, and the language is generally appropriate for a formal letter. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice or collocation inaccuracies, such as “Barret,” “maintiang,” “remove a lot of workload,” and “on every weekends.” “Festivals” may also be less precise than “public holidays” if that is what you mean. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim to check spelling and learn common combinations such as “reduce your workload” and “at weekends.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional “As I have professional experience … it would remove…” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the time information is communicated clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb patterns, articles, and number: “I would like help you” needs “I would like to help you,” while “I have project” needs an article, such as “I have a project.” The phrase “on every weekends” also has a number and determiner problem. In addition, “on week days” is better expressed as “on weekdays.” Reviewing infinitive patterns and article use would improve accuracy while preserving your sentence variety.
