Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Hope you are doing well. I am Neethu Simon writing in response to your advertisement. I am an experienced home care worker and I have been helping elderly people for almost 15 years now.

I could give you a hand with your household chores like cooking, washing, cleaning, shopping or driving you to places. I believe you might not need help with every thing. It would be amazing if you can let me know of exactly what sort of help you are looking for? Not to mention I am an extrovet, if you are looking for someone to talk. I would be a perfect fit.

I am very passionate about helping and taking care of people. My mom is a nurse and she inspired me a lot. This job is something that I feel very rewarding. I love spending time with people who have a lot of experience and life stories to share.

I want to be transparent about my availability as well. I will not be available from December 23rd to 30th. Except that I will be available anytime from 7am to 9pm.

Hope to hear from you soon and please let me know of your requirments.

Hopefully,

Neethu Simon

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in the prompt: you offer household help, explain your motivation, and give a period when you are unavailable alongside your usual hours. Your experience caring for older people and your mother’s influence make the reason for applying relevant. The range of possible duties is useful, but the offer remains somewhat general; for example, you could explain which tasks you are most confident doing or how your experience would help Mrs Barrett specifically. The availability is clear in broad terms, though it would be helpful to state which days you can work and clarify which summer the December dates refer to. These details would make the letter more fully developed and tailored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: introduction and experience, proposed help, reasons for applying, and availability. Separate paragraphs make each purpose easy to follow, and transitions such as “I am writing in response to your advertisement” and “I want to be transparent about my availability” guide the reader effectively. The progression is logical throughout. Some links between ideas could be smoother: the shift from household tasks to being “someone to talk” is abrupt, and “Except that” is an awkward way to introduce your available hours. A more conventional closing would also suit the otherwise clear letter format. Overall, cohesion works well, with a few phrases that interrupt the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including relevant phrases such as “household chores,” “experienced home care worker,” and “passionate about helping.” These choices communicate your experience and intentions clearly, and the list of tasks is specific. There are also some inaccurate or informal choices that limit precision: “extrovet” is misspelled, “every thing” should be one word, and “requ irments” is misspelled. “This job is something that I feel very rewarding” is an unnatural expression, while “give you a hand” is conversational for a formal application letter. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as describing the work as “personally rewarding” and offering “assistance with household tasks.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “I have been helping elderly people for almost 15 years” and the conditional “if you are looking for someone to talk.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your message. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. “Hope you are doing well” omits the subject, and “It would be amazing if you can let me know” would be more consistent as “if you could let me know.” The question mark after this indirect request is also unnecessary. In “This job is something that I feel very rewarding,” the sentence structure is faulty; write “I find this job very rewarding.” More consistent control of these patterns would strengthen accuracy.
