Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing to show my keen interest regarding your advertisement posted yesterday in The Times newspaper. It would be a great opportunity to spend my summer vacations helping someone.

I work as an instructor in University of Victoria and I love meeting people from different nations and culture. I am multilingual so conversation would not be a hurdle between us. In addition, I go to sikh temple every weekend where I do selfless service which includes, cook and serve delicious food, wash dishes and clothes and sometimes brooming and moping. Doing these services not only bring peace to me mind but also allow me to become multitasking.

Based on these skills, I could help you in any kind of household chores. Considering my job, I remain off from work during summers and as usual I was searching for a voluntary activity in which I can help someone and socialise. Your need for someone to help you work as win win situation for both of us.

My husband passed away in 2022 and all my children are busy with their families therefore during summers I will be available during week days between 10am to 6pm. I would love to hear back from you, thank you for your time.

yours faithfully

Sargun.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you describe relevant household help through your temple service, explain your interest in helping and socialising, and give weekday hours when you are available. The examples of cooking, washing dishes and clothes, and cleaning make your offer concrete. Your reason for wanting the work is also clear, though the personal circumstances about your husband and children do not explain when you are unavailable; you should state any days or times you cannot work. The claim that you can help with “any kind” of chores is broad, and the mutual benefit could be explained more specifically. These details keep some parts less fully developed, although the letter’s purpose is clear and relevant throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your interest, describe your experience and skills, explain your motivation, and finish with your availability. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “In addition” and “Based on these skills” guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth: the move from your temple activities to being “multitasking” is abrupt, and the paragraph about your job, volunteering and the “win win situation” combines several ideas without fully explaining their relationship. The closing also runs directly from your availability into thanks. More precise transitions and a separate, concise closing would make the progression feel more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the letter and include some specific vocabulary, such as “multilingual,” “selfless service,” “household chores” and “voluntary activity.” These choices help explain your background and offer. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions: “keen interest regarding,” “summer vacations,” “socialise” in this context, and “win win situation” do not sound fully natural in a formal letter. “Brooming and moping” also appears to be an inaccurate choice of words for cleaning tasks. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make your vocabulary more precise and appropriate to the situation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the relative clause “where I do selfless service” and the conditional-style phrase “Based on these skills, I could help you.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the letter. For example, “in University of Victoria” needs an article, “which includes, cook and serve” has an incorrect verb form and punctuation, and “Doing these services not only bring” has subject–verb disagreement. “peace to me mind” also contains an incorrect possessive form, while “I remain off from work” and “I was searching” do not express the intended time relationship clearly. Review articles, agreement, verb forms and tense consistency, and proofread sentence boundaries.
