Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing as a response to your advertisement for household help you need in coming summer for few hours in a day.
I work in hospitality in well reputed hotel in New York. I have been in this field for seven years.I started as a cleaner and promoted to Manager last year.I am very good at doing all household related stuff like cleaning, preparing food.I have also done diploma in Gardening and Plumbing. Apart from house work , i will also help with these activities.
I will be having two months holiday in comming summer. I want to utilize this time by doing some good work which helps me to feel connected to my work. I also want to help community and this add solves my purpose.Your place is near to my house which solves my commute problem too as I don't have car.
I want to highlight that my friend's wedding is planned on 2nd week of June so i will not be available for couple of days on 15,16th of june but I will make sure before going holliday,i will complete my work.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you describe relevant help with cleaning, food preparation, gardening and plumbing; explain your motivation through community service and convenience; and identify dates when you cannot work. Your hospitality experience also gives the offer credibility. However, some details are less fully developed: “a few days” is not precise when you name only 15 and 16 June, and you do not clearly state your usual working days or hours during the two-month holiday. The reason that the work will help you feel connected to your profession is also not fully explained. Clarifying your regular availability and making the dates consistent would make the letter more complete and specific.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your response, describe your experience and possible help, explain your reasons, and finish with availability and a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Apart from” and “I also” help connect related points. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The sentence about the wedding follows your reasons without a clear transition, and “this add solves my purpose” is difficult to follow, weakening the link between your motivation and the advertisement. The availability paragraph also focuses on when you cannot work without first setting out your normal schedule. Use clearer transitions and organise the final paragraph around your regular availability followed by the exception.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including relevant terms such as “hospitality,” “cleaner,” “Manager,” “Gardening” and “Plumbing.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “commute problem.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “household related stuff,” “this add solves my purpose,” and “feel connected to my work” do not express your meaning naturally. Spelling and form errors, including “comming,” “holliday” and “i,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise phrases such as “household tasks,” “the advertisement suits my needs,” and “remain connected to my profession,” and check spelling and capitalisation carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including “I am writing as a response to…” and the conditional clause “before going… I will…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “in coming summer” and “for few hours in a day” are missing articles, while “I have been in this field for seven years.I started” needs sentence punctuation and spacing. The sentence “my friend's wedding is planned on 2nd week of June” has an awkward grammatical pattern, and “this add solves my purpose” lacks a clear grammatical relationship between its parts. Improve article use, sentence boundaries and clause construction, while retaining the range of sentence forms you attempt.
