Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I'm writing this to let you know that I can help in your house during next summer on weekends.
My name is Rizvan Vahora, currently residing in 62 wantanopa park, 2 blocks away from your house. I can do some house house chores including, cleaning your place and I can look after all of your plants and grass around your house.
I am away from my family and I have plenty of time during summer. Intially I was planning on going to my home country India, but my family decided to renovate our home and told me to postpone visit. All of my friends already made their plans and I can't really do anything about that, that is why I decided to help you instead of getting bored in summer.
I can assist you on weekends on my dayoff's. Recently I secured a job in Ritz Carlton Hotel in Downtown Toronto. So my weekdays are occupied as of now.
Kind Regards,
Rizvan Vahora

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you offer cleaning and plant care, explain that your family’s renovation changed your summer plans, and state that you are available on weekends because of your hotel job. These details make the letter relevant and give a clear reason for applying. The offer of help is specific, but the duties could be developed further—for example, by saying what cleaning tasks you can do or how often you can water the plants. Your availability is also somewhat broad: clarify which weekend hours you can work and whether you are unavailable on weekdays throughout the summer. This covers the task well overall, while fuller detail would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a sensible overall order: you introduce your offer, describe your experience and motivation, then explain your schedule. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and the reader can follow the main message. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. The long explanation about your family’s renovation, your friends’ plans, and getting bored takes attention away from your reason for wanting the work. The phrase “that is why” links the ideas, but the relationship could be expressed more directly. Also, “on weekends on my dayoff’s” repeats the timing and makes the availability statement less clear. A more concise motivation paragraph and a direct closing sentence would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “house chores,” “look after,” “renovate,” and “postpone.” These choices show some range beyond very basic wording. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for a formal letter: “house house chores,” “during next summer,” and “dayoff’s.” “Getting bored” also sounds informal and does not present your motivation positively. Spelling errors such as “Intially” and “wantanopa” reduce accuracy, while “grass around your house” is less precise than describing garden care. Aim for natural collocations and a consistently polite register. More precise wording for the tasks and your motivation would make the letter sound more confident and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of short statements and longer sentences, and most of the message remains understandable. The sentence beginning “Intially I was planning…” shows an attempt to explain a sequence of events using connected clauses. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “During next summer” needs an article or a different time expression, and “I can help in your house” is less natural than “I can help around your house.” The sentence “My name is Rizvan Vahora, currently residing…” is a fragment because it lacks a finite verb in the second part. In “I can assist you on weekends on my dayoff’s,” the repeated preposition pattern makes the sentence awkward. Check sentence completeness, articles, and prepositions to improve control.
