Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I saw your advertisement about wanting someone to assist with some housechores for a few hours a day next summer. I am writing to express my interest in the role because I would be on break during that period.
I can assist with cleaning the house, washing the dishes, doing the laundry and even engaging your kids in certain age-appropriate activities. Being the first child of my family with four siblings, I have valuable experience in making the house tidy and nurturing young children, so i believe I am suitable for this job.
Working at your home during the holiday would give me the opportunity to learn about the culture, tradition and way of life of a typical English family. I also need the job so that I can save some money for my tuition fee next semester.
Since my college would be on break during summer, I would be available to work from Monday through Friday. However, I'd like to be free during the weekends so that I can have enough time to rest and prepare for the coming week.
I hope you consider my application and I look forward to a favourable response.
Yours faithfully,
Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you suggest household tasks and childcare, explain your interest in learning about English family life and saving for tuition, and state that you are available on weekdays but not weekends. Your experience as the eldest of four siblings also supports your suitability for the work. These relevant details give the reader a clear picture of your motivation and abilities. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the exact hours or dates you could work, since “a few hours a day next summer” is not matched with a specific schedule. You could also make the childcare offer conditional on Mrs Barrett having children.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce your interest, describe your skills, explain your reasons, and then give your availability. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “because,” “so,” and “However” help show how the ideas relate. The closing is appropriate and completes the letter. Cohesion is generally effective, though some links between points could be smoother. For example, the sentence about being the first child in your family moves quickly from household experience to childcare. A brief transition explaining how caring for your siblings developed both skills would make the progression more natural and connected.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “age-appropriate activities,” “nurturing,” “tuition fee,” and “favourable response.” These choices communicate your skills and reasons effectively, and there is some variety beyond basic household vocabulary. However, a few expressions are less natural or precise, including “housechores” and “learn about the culture, tradition and way of life of a typical English family.” The latter is understandable but broad, and “tradition” would normally be plural in this list. Greater control of common collocations and more precise phrasing would strengthen the vocabulary while keeping the tone natural and suitably formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a good mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “Since my college would be on break during summer” and “so that I can have enough time to rest.” Many sentences are accurate and easy to follow, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few errors remain: the pronoun “i” should be capitalised, and “the culture, tradition and way of life” needs a plural form for parallel accuracy. The phrase “Being the first child of my family with four siblings” is also structurally awkward and could be recast as “As the eldest of five children.” Continue checking capitalisation, articles and number agreement, while retaining the varied sentence structures you already use.
