IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.
Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter
- suggest how you could help her in her home
- say why you would like to do this work
- explain when you will and will not be available
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing in response to your advertisement to show my availability for assisting you for few hours a day in coming summer.
I can help you in household chores like ironing dresses, cooking food and bringing goods from market. Additionally, I can teach your children tuition class and help them with their homework along with playing with them. I can also work as a driver and can also help you in transportation.
I am keen to do this work because I live close to your home and this job is accessible and feasible for me. I also have an experience of working as a chef and driver along with teaching to young kids which make this work suitable for me.
I am working as a home tutor in evening time from 2p.m to 6 .pm, that's why I will only be available in the morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m in which I can manage all your household chores.
I am requesting you to consider me and give me an opportunity to assist you in your home. I am looking forward to a positive response from you.
Yours sincerely,
Jawad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points in the prompt: you list household tasks and childcare, explain that the work suits you because you live nearby and have relevant experience, and give your morning availability. The letter also maintains a clear, polite purpose. Your examples of cooking, ironing and helping children make the offer relevant, while your experience as a chef, driver and tutor supports your suitability. To strengthen the response further, clarify the availability details: you say you work from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. but do not explicitly state whether you are unavailable at other times, and the morning hours are presented as your only availability. Develop this point precisely so Mrs Barrett can understand when you can and cannot work.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, practical order: you introduce your interest, describe the help you can offer, explain your motivation and experience, and then give your schedule. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “because” help connect related ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal enquiry. Some connections are less smooth where several duties are listed in one sentence, and “I can also work as a driver and can also help you in transportation” repeats the same linking pattern. Grouping the tasks more clearly and varying transitions would make the progression feel more flexible and less list-like, while retaining the clear overall organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “household chores,” “advertisement,” “availability,” and “opportunity.” These choices make your purpose and proposed duties clear. You also attempt more formal expressions such as “feasible” and “consider me,” although some combinations are not fully natural: “bringing goods from market,” “teach your children tuition class,” and “help you in transportation” could be expressed more idiomatically. “I have an experience” is also an inaccurate word choice in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more precise collocations and natural phrasing would improve fluency and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a longer sentence explaining your schedule. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “for few hours” needs an article, “which make this work suitable” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “I am working as a home tutor in evening time” has problems with article use and phrasing. The time expression “2p.m to 6 .pm” also needs consistent punctuation. Check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, and aim to make the longer sentences more controlled. This would improve accuracy without sacrificing the range you already attempt.
