IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.

Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I am writing in regards to the advertisement for a housemaid during next summer. I thought it will be best to contact you since I live around your neighbourhood.

To start with, I am interested in assisting you in doing the house chores such as cleaning, cooking and running errands. This is important because I have been doing these perfectly well for over 5 years all by myself and I think I will be in the best place to render such services to you.

As for why I would like to do this work, its due to the fact that I find working as an hobby. This keeps me occupied while helping people fulfill their goals.

Furthermore, I will be available mondays to fridays from 7am to 8pm while I spend the weekends to attend to my personal needs and family.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to a favourable response from you when you get the chance.

Yours sincerely,

Aimuan Reuben.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in the prompt: you offer help with cleaning, cooking and errands, explain that you enjoy working and helping people, and give a weekday schedule with weekends unavailable. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. The range of help is practical, but the reason for wanting the job is less fully explained: “I find working as an hobby” does not clarify what specifically attracts you to this particular role. Your availability is also broad, with no indication of whether you could work for only a few hours within that period. The response shows some development, especially through your experience of doing chores for five years, but more specific details would make the ideas more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening that identifies the advertisement, paragraphs covering your proposed help and motivation, a paragraph on availability, and a polite closing. Connectors such as “To start with,” “As for why,” and “Furthermore” help signal the sequence, and the reader can follow the main points. However, these transitions feel somewhat formulaic, and the link between your experience and your suitability could be made more direct. The availability sentence also combines weekday hours and weekend commitments in a slightly awkward way, so the contrast is not as smooth as it could be. Use simpler, more natural links and keep each paragraph focused on one point to make progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including “assisting,” “house chores,” “running errands,” and “personal needs.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally polite. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “in regards to” and “favourable response,” though some phrasing is not fully natural or precise. For example, “working as an hobby” is an awkward collocation, while “render such services” sounds overly formal for a personal letter. There are spelling and capitalization slips, including “Barret” for “Barrett” and lowercase “mondays.” Aim for natural, accurate phrases suited to writing directly to a prospective employer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “This is important because…” and the clause “while I spend the weekends…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “I thought it will be best,” the tense sequence should be consistent, and “its due to the fact” needs the contraction “it’s” and a clearer sentence structure. The phrase “working as an hobby” also has an article error. In the availability sentence, the construction “I will be available … while I spend…” does not express the contrast smoothly. Review tense consistency, articles, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex clauses with careful control.
