Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing to show my interest for your latest advertisement of helping you in your home for a certain hours a day following summer.

To start with, although I am not a skilled worker, I wish to help you with cleaning your house. I have been supporting a little to my mother every day to clean and organise our home, which is why I strongly think I would be able to provide you some hours of arranging your home in next holidays.

I would not only like to help you because I love helping other but I also believe spending a quality time with elders enhances my knowledge of real life lessons.

Next year summer I will be enrolling for dance course, which would only allow me to provide my services for a few hours of a day. After verifying the dance classes timing, I will be available on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings after 6 pm to visit you for assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Krishna Yogi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer to clean and organise the house, explain that you enjoy helping others and value learning from older people, and give specific available evenings. These details make your purpose clear and relevant. The response also shows some development, particularly through your experience helping your mother. However, the offer is not fully specific about other possible household duties or how many hours you could work, and the reason for wanting the job is less developed than the availability information. The dance course is mentioned, but you do not clearly state which times you will be unavailable. Clarifying these points and extending the motivation would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your interest, describe relevant experience, explain your motivation, and then discuss your schedule. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “To start with” and “not only…but also” help connect ideas. The reader can follow the main message without difficulty. To strengthen cohesion further, make the relationship between your dance course and your availability more explicit, including the times you cannot work. Some transitions feel formulaic, and the final availability paragraph combines the course, timetable, and offer in a slightly compressed way. A more direct progression from your commitments to your available and unavailable times would make the organisation feel more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “clean and organise,” “provide you,” and “available,” and you attempt more expressive phrases such as “enhances my knowledge of real life lessons.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “interest for your latest advertisement,” “a certain hours,” and “spending a quality time with elders” do not sound idiomatic. “Following summer” is also unclear in this context. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your intentions, but they make the letter less fluent and polished. Focus on common natural combinations for applications and household tasks, and choose wording that clearly identifies the season and your motivation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the concessive opening “although I am not a skilled worker” and the “not only…but also” construction. Most ideas remain understandable, and the longer sentences show an attempt to vary structure. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “a certain hours” has an article–number mismatch, while “help you with cleaning your house” would be more naturally formed as “help you clean your house.” In “I will be available on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings,” the tense is clear, but the earlier reference to “Next year summer” needs a more accurate grammatical form. Review articles, plural agreement, and sentence phrasing; greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
