Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this email to help you out for your household work in the next summer.

I am Shraddha Kapadia. I live in the same neighbourhood and I saw your advertisement about help in your home for a few hours a day next summer. I am a great chef so that I could make food if you wish. Apart from this, I could help you with your household chores too. What is more, I could do a babysit if you want me to help you out.

I would love to help you with anything as I want to build a good relationship with you. Regardless of anything, neighbours are the first family members. In addition, I could improve my English as you are an English-speaking woman and we could teach each other about our cultures too.

I will be available to work on Saturdays in the month of July, 2027. I have a job on weekdays and on Sundays I have some other plans with my family.

Hoping to hear back from you.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Shraddha Kapadia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you offer cooking, household chores and babysitting, explain that you hope to build a relationship and practise English, and give a specific availability period. The response is relevant and the reader can understand your intentions. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, “I am a great chef” does not explain what kind of meals you could prepare, and your availability is limited to Saturdays in July without clarifying the hours you could work. The reasons for wanting the job are understandable, but “neighbours are the first family members” is rather general. Develop these details and make the letter’s purpose and arrangements more precise. The response meets the stated length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce yourself and offer help, explain your motivation, then state when you are available. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “Apart from this,” “What is more,” and “In addition” help connect related points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. At times, however, the transitions feel formulaic, and several offers are listed without showing how they relate to Mrs Barrett’s needs. The closing also uses both “Hoping to hear back from you” and “Thank you,” which makes the ending slightly repetitive. Use fewer, more natural connectors and make the relationship between ideas clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “household chores,” “advertisement,” “available,” and “build a good relationship.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “babysit,” though the phrasing is not natural in this context. Some word choices and collocations are awkward: “help you out for your household work” and “do a babysit” would be clearer as “help with household tasks” and “look after children.” “Next summer” is repeated, and “great chef” is broad rather than precise. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit naturalness and precision. Build a wider set of accurate phrases for domestic tasks, childcare and availability.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to follow. For instance, “I would love to help you with anything as I want to build a good relationship with you” combines ideas in a clear subordinate structure. Some grammatical choices need attention. In “I am a great chef so that I could make food,” the purpose/result construction is not appropriate; use “so I could prepare meals” or “I could prepare meals for you.” “I could do a babysit” also has an incorrect grammatical pattern. The sentence beginning “Regardless of anything” is awkwardly constructed. Review verb patterns and clause connections, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
