Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett, I saw an advertisement on the daily new paper that you need someone on the 21st of June for few hours in the mid summer. I know how hard is to live in other nation, So I can help you to keep your garden nice for the summer with a lot of plants and flowers. I can also teach you the dishes those are popular in India and you can cook them easily without wasting your valuable time. I am a social worker and I love to spend time with international people because by this I can not only enhance my communication skills but it also provides me a chance to gather information about their culture and society. It would be so grateful if you provide me this task. I am doing part time job in summer in the early morning. I have tuition classes on the weekend, I can not miss my important classes.I am available on afternoon time. Feel free to reach out if this time works for you as well. Your faithfully, Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you offer help with the garden and cooking, explain that you enjoy meeting people from other cultures, and give some information about your schedule. The reasons for wanting the work are relevant, especially your interest in improving communication skills and learning about culture. However, availability is not fully clear: “I am doing part time job in summer in the early morning” and “I am available on afternoon time” do not specify which days or the exact period you can work, while the weekend tuition is mentioned without clarifying whether you are unavailable all weekend. The offer to teach Indian dishes is also less directly connected to helping in Mrs Barrett’s home. More precise availability and a little more detail about your practical help would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the advertisement and your offer, explain your motivation, then describe your availability and close politely. The paragraphs help distinguish these purposes, and linking expressions such as “I can also” and “because” make the relationships between ideas understandable. To make the organisation more polished, separate the opening salutation from the first sentence and use paragraph breaks consistently; the large spaces in the response make the layout look uneven. Some connections could also be more explicit—for example, explain how your morning job and weekend tuition affect the hours you can offer. The closing is appropriate in function, though the sign-off should follow a conventional letter format.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the situation, including “garden,” “plants and flowers,” “communication skills,” and “culture and society.” These choices make your main ideas clear, and phrases such as “valuable time” show an attempt to use language beyond basic vocabulary. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably unnatural, such as “daily new paper,” “live in other nation,” “on afternoon time,” and “It would be so grateful.” These reduce the naturalness of the letter, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim to learn common combinations for advertisements, availability, and polite offers, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrastive structure “I can not only enhance my communication skills but it also provides me a chance…” and the reason clause beginning “because.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “how hard is to live” has incorrect word order and omits a subject, while “I have tuition classes on the weekend, I can not miss…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. The sentence about your part-time job also needs clearer grammatical links between the time information and your availability. Use a more controlled range of sentence patterns, check clause boundaries, and ensure subjects and verbs agree throughout.
