Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

My name is Fara and I am writing to you regarding your advertisement about someone to help you with learning French language for a few hours a day next summer.

I live nearby to your house about four houses along the main road and coming to your house is convenient to me. I am a teacher at the Secondary School and have a degree in French. This summer, I am available as I will be on school holidays.

Teaching is my ambition and I am very delighted to know that you are eager to discover this language at your age. Of course, this will be helpful to you and I am curious to know the reason pushing you to learn it.

Therefore, I will be availabe on Mondays and Thursdays from 09.00 to 11.00 and in the afternoon from 14.00 to 15.00 and the remaining days I will be busy giving tuition to my students.

I hope that you will be free and keen to accept my service.

You may contact me if you require additional information.

Yours faithfully,

Fara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The letter gives relevant information about your qualifications, motivation and schedule: you say you teach at a secondary school, have a French degree, enjoy teaching, and are free on Mondays and Thursdays at specified times. However, the task asks how you could help Mrs Barrett in her home, whereas you interpret the advertisement as a request for French lessons. This changes the central purpose of the letter, so the offer of help with household tasks is missing. Your reason for wanting the work is also only briefly explained, and the availability statement does not clearly say when you will be unavailable beyond mentioning tuition on the remaining days. Address the advertised home-help role directly and develop each required point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is arranged in a sensible sequence: you introduce yourself, explain your background and motivation, give your schedule, and close politely. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Therefore” make the progression easy to follow. This coherent overall organisation is a strength. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear: “Therefore” does not show a clear consequence of the preceding paragraph, and “the remaining days” could be more precisely linked to your availability. The opening also establishes a French-teaching purpose that does not match the home-help advertisement, which weakens the overall progression. Use paragraphs that follow the three requested points and make transitions reflect the actual relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “advertisement,” “ambition,” “available,” and “additional information.” These choices make your meaning generally clear, and the tone is mostly polite. There are some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, however, such as “help you with learning French language,” “the reason pushing you to learn it,” and “accept my service.” “Availabe” is also misspelled. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Choose collocations that fit the intended home-help role, and use conventional expressions such as “I would be pleased to assist” rather than “accept my service.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled, including “I am a teacher at the Secondary School and have a degree in French” and the sentence giving your available times. The message remains understandable despite some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, “I live nearby to your house about four houses along the main road” has an awkwardly constructed location phrase, while “I am curious to know the reason pushing you to learn it” omits a grammatical link such as “that is.” The long availability sentence would also be clearer if divided or punctuated more carefully. Continue using varied structures, but check sentence construction and punctuation so the more complex ideas read smoothly.
