Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying environmental damage and suggesting solutions for both governments and individuals. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how plastic affects marine life is brief, and the solutions provided are slightly repetitive and lack depth. While the position is clear, the essay would benefit from more detailed examples or a more nuanced exploration of the 'individual' aspect of the solution, which is currently overshadowed by government-focused suggestions. Overall, it meets the requirements but remains at a basic level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'For example' and 'Government should'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow of the argument could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better signposting to connect the ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'products seems attractable' instead of 'attractive' and 'effected environment' instead of 'affected the environment'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic terms like 'harmful', 'problems', and 'solutions'. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and less common lexical items to express ideas with greater sophistication and accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('there are an increase of usage', 'plastics which takes'), incorrect article usage, and awkward sentence construction ('implement a rules whereby'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy. More attention to proofreading for tense consistency and pluralization would be beneficial.
