Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying environmental damage caused by plastic and suggesting solutions for both governments and individuals. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on marine life and the release of toxic gases. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how plastic affects the 'air quality index' is vague and lacks clear logical connection to the burning of plastic. While the position is clear, the arguments could be more thoroughly extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is adequately covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'Therefore', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is imprecise, such as 'these rules' which refers back to a general concept rather than a specific preceding clause. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'non-essential', 'discarding facilities', and 'reusable'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'non dissolving product' (should be 'non-biodegradable'), 'effecting' (should be 'affecting'), and 'eatable things' (should be 'food items'). These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range and occasional inaccuracy in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and subject-verb agreement, such as 'people burns' (should be 'people burn'), 'is effecting' (should be 'is affecting'), and 'there surroundings' (should be 'their surroundings'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences. The errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended message.
