Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the environmental damage caused by plastic and potential solutions from governments and individuals. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on marine life and the suggestion of government bans. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of microplastics and the suggestion for individuals to boycott businesses could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'To add on', and 'To sum up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'that how it damages', is slightly awkward. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'microplastic', 'organic compound', and 'textile industries'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'palstic', 'irreponsibly', 'imapcted', 'ocens', 'thier', and 'sourroundings'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on accuracy in spelling and attempt to use a wider range of less common collocations to demonstrate more sophisticated control over the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the rivers', 'the ocens'), subject-verb agreement ('textile industries uses'), and word order ('that how it damages'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'people throws the waste' and 'it has done significant imapct'. While the student attempts complex structures, these often contain errors. The punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the clarity of the writing.
